How many events have you bailed on or DNF?

I nearly bailed at the Y2 Karoo this past weekend. I have been doing big miles the last few months.

I thought the Y2k would be a walk in the park.

Prologue 25km broke me.

Stage 1: 75 km nearly killed me.

Stage 2: 75 km wasnt as bad as stage 1.

Ja, I finished but is was a super *** race for me which is a pity because this is a magic stage race.

I was really worried about suffering so much on stages that are a third of the distance of my typical training rides.

Asked a few okes who know their shite.

Apparently it has to do with intensity. From LSD to this fast acceleration, up down . hard work ride.

And I am sick today, I think I was already coming down with a bug this weekend.

trail type racing very hard vs endurance type long rides - I enjoy the longer endurance more and less the hard type nissan trail races - I feel much better after 160km endurance pace then I do after 70km hard trail type racing

2 DNF and 2 DNS since I started riding/running/paddling in early '89 ...

DNF at the Orkney STD triathlon somewhere in the early 90's, 3 punctures ... No tubes left [emoji852]

DNF at the Vaal marathon around 2001, injured my achilles tendon ... Took forever to get over that and in fact never ran again. Also the cause of my first DNS, had entered for IronMan that year [emoji852]

DNS at the R4V a few years ago because I woke up and it was pouring with rain, was so mad because turned out that it stopped before the start and was a lekker day!

DNF in a mtb race where I crashed pretty badly and a DNF in a triathlon where I was stupid enough to swim in an old surfing wetsuit. The neck was too tight and I couldnt breathe properly so by the first bouy I was done.

I often DNS, work schedules change too often.

Have twice DNS Tour Durban, due to over sleeping, after taking the effort to drive down. Too many gins at dinner the night before, might have contributed.

Dont think I have DNFed a race before.

So I am picking up that for many it has to do with priorities, like for example work or family. For me unless it is death in the family or something as serious as that I can normally plan my entries around family events.

Work will never take a higher priority.

I bailed on the 2011 100 miler MTB race at the 50 mile mark. Technically I finished race; just not the race I started.

Finished the same race in 2010 comfortably, but just hadn't trained enough the following year and totally underestimated how fit I was the first time I did it.

Other than that, I've also had a few DNS due to the weather/schedule. If you're not feeling amped for a "fun ride", I personally see no reason to take part. I do it for enjoyment.

How long should you wait after "the snip" asking for a friend.

Don't know. Doctor told me not to ride - guess who didn't listen? Probably a week.
