Sweets daily - effects now and in the future

I eat lots of sweets, candy or whatever you call it.

A chocolate or sometimes 2 a day.

I do excise a decent amount, ie since active rewards began i only once missed my goal and that was due to miss calculation.

My excise is normally a run, cycle, sometimes a watt bike and every now and then a swim.

My health stats at my yearly vitality assessment is always well in range. Im skinny and rarely get sick.

I generally eat very healthy, lots of veg and fruit and salad. But around 30 min or so after supper and sometimes lunch the sweet monster strikes.

My question: what is the effect if my sweet tooth on my busy in the short and long?

Bad habits will catch up with you over time but we're all unique so you may well get away with it.

One side effect of the sugar binging that I became very aware of was the mood change that came with the sugar low (which inevitably follows the sugar high).

Another side effect I found (which may not affect many) is that my body was great at burning sugar but pretty useless at burning anything else which affected my stamina. It's much better having reduced sugar and introduced a few fasting rides.

V12man, what can cause severe headaches after strenuous exercise?

I've cut down on my sugar intake (sweets and chocolates) to almost nothing, but still takes 2 x teaspoons of sugar in my 5 x a day cup of coffee.

I'm using the "low GI" sports drinks, but I almost always suffer from the worst headaches either later in the same day, or the next. I do make sure to hydrate sufficiently, and I eat on longer rides.

Edit : I have done a glucose tolerance test a few years back, when I was still binge-ing on sugar and was all normal.

I donate blood, so my sugar levels are checked every 2nd month.

Visit the physio and have your neck checked out.

The position one is in on the bike, even after a bike fit, can cause havoc.

Personally I have had a lot of problems with this including severe migraines.

I use to eat a lot of sweets when I was younger, 16-30 ish.. Jelly tots etc..

I'm 36 now and I'm not sure if it is that ones body just becomes less and less tolerant of sugar but If I ate a pack of jelly tots right now, Id have a blocked nose in 10 minutes time, become irritable and struggle with concentration.. (I have been off sweets for the last couple of years since more awareness that its actually is poison)

Like a lot of things, they catch up with you eventually.. and I am not even old yet.

Imagine my dilemma - I've got a sweet tooth as a type I diabetic!

I try cut back on excessive carbs, especially refined or high GI.

But to satisfy my vice, I drink plenty of "zero" cold drinks, all loaded with aspartame. Now that's another story which I'm too scared to consider.

You should consider it - very seriously - WHO has a list of symptoms from aspartame.... none of which are a good thing....

My cardiologist took me off Aspartame anything when I had chest pains during rides (had recently dropped sugar intakes and swapped to sweeteners) chest pain went away.... never again....... (and no - I didn't believe him at first)..... I did after some homework when my angina disappeared.

It's also heavily implicated in migraine's for some people - and a long list of other things.

V12man.

Does not really matter how late or early, cool or hot, whenever I put in a hard effort of 2hrs plus, I just know I'm gonna suffer.

I tried everything I could think of, including perhaps over hydrating (not likely, easy to measure with water bottles consumed (750ml for every hour, more if it's hot))

I looked at my food / calorie intake, adjusted that from fasting to almost over consumption, no difference.

I am one of those okes with a very high HR during exercise (from resting of around 50 up to high 180's when going hard, avg of between 155-165 bpm per session) I'm into my 50's already, but I can still maintain efforts in the 180's for extended periods, sometimes going into the 190's when really pushing it. Not sure if this can have an effect, but I doubt, as I went on a slow ride of 2hrs on sat, and still had my headache later in the day.

I know this issue of high average heart rates when racing... often deep into the 160's for 2 or more hours - this has probably nothing to do with your headache post exercise, and you should just stop being concerned about it in the absence of other symptoms.

Have you ever done any blood pressure studies - so wearing an automated continuous monitoring setup?

Not being a gp or physician, I don't normally ever deal with headaches - the last (only) one I diagnosed accurately was by accident almost.... saw something odd on a friends mri after he slammed his head on a mast (migraine sufferer) and the radiologist did some more trickery and found an aneurysm in the circle of willis.... which was subsequently operated on (insanely difficult op) and his migraines cleared up - but  he did suffer from some personality changes post op, depression and the like - ultimately committed suicide about 5 years later.

Finding the cause for you will be a long winded process of eliminating possibilities... but I would start with an information search - give me a few days and I will ask around - see if there is a decent list of things to eliminate somewhere - but I see a lot of effort (cost) involved in finding this.

I suffer from the exact same symptoms. A 2 hour ride and I'll have a headache later in the day. If it's vigorous (HR up to 180s), it'll be a bad one that only a proper pain killer can stop.

You have daily sugar quota. Spend it wisely. There is more hidden sugar in food than you think. Everything from white cane sugar to the most organic natural honey is basically the same thing as far as your body is concerned - it's highly refined carb and should be avoided.

Please don't laugh but i enjoy Klipdrift Premium with either Coke Zero or Coke Light and on 2 seperate occasions about 21 days apart i woked up during the night with this terrible feeling. I was sweaty, had this funny feeling on my stomach/chest and really thought i was going to have a Heart attack. Now i wear a defibrilator so i have an irregular heart beat sometimes(reason why it was put in). Could this be related to the Aspartame in the said beverages?

Man this thread is scaring me....

I love sweets and chocolates and biscuits and fruit and honey and I mostly drink diet drinks and have artificial sweetner with my coffee 99% of the time

Hardly ever get headaches, weighed more or less the same 79 kg for the last 33 years (53 now)

Looking for some wood to touch, does s newspaper count as wood?

you lucky sod ...

you sound like my wife !  Forever sipping on Coca Cola, LOVE chocolates, cookies, the list goes on and on ... maybe 5kg heavier than when we married 26 years ago.

some people are lucky ....

Mine .... classic lifestyle ..... possibly partly why my numbers are so good on a proper healthy eating plan and moderate exercise.

then you get the 10 year old kid that has 5% body fat that gets diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes .... no rhyme nor reason  .....    I really feel SORRY for these kids !!

Its not luck nor easy... i have to work hard to keep my weight constant.

Its a constant give n take situation, the more you take (eat) the more you have to give (exercise and sacrifice).

Most of the time i eat sweet stuff out of habit not because i really crave it...but as soon as i feel my pants getting a bit tighter i reduce intake and increase exercise and so it goes..round and round

My mind is weak
