All that said, I hate to have to warranty anything sold to MTBers...

So that explains why you looking to replace the Edge 520 which is still current.

(Bloody MTBers )

This is the part that I'm conflicted about. The replacement-at-cost option when the unit is a few years old is amazing customer service.

But when it's a month out of warranty... as much as I agree that they're doing more than they're obligated to (and more than other similar companies do) it still burns.

But in balance they probably get t right most of the time.

You could never satisfy nor get a standard sustainable approach to the fringe cases.

Ok, we don't have to get all facebook-emotional about it.

It's called discretion and they are fully entitled to use theirs as they see fit. If it was my customer, my faulty product and my decision I know what I would've done.

Rule 1: Don’t be a tjop

Basically it boils down to perception... nothing more!!  What is acceptable to some with regards to warranty and out of warranty is not acceptable to others!!

As Garmin have given their verdict...a social media rant is unlikely to change that given the number of units of each variety of GPS unit or watch they sell and how quickly they are including new units in their line up such as the vivoactive and the soon to be released FR645..... so I doubt they will be changing their outcome on this matter!!

The reality is that the OP only has 1 real option.

Pay the R2k and get a new device which works.

The other options are terrible.

Scrap the R6500 watch and spend another R7000 (guess here)  on a different brand and hope that unit lasts longer than 13 months.

Ranting on social media might help in getting rid of his frustration but that's about it.

Garmin have their policies and if they had to give in to the OP's demands it would open up a can of worms because the next person would have their watch for 14 months and expect the a new watch for free and it just goes on.

Here's my problem. And it's not just Garmin. They admit to no flaws in their products ever. But in a year or so when the new upgraded Model RX 1000 is launched with big fanfare, you will hear that the problems that plagued the old model have all been solved.

And the thing about "just what do you expect, and for how long after the guarantee expired" is this. They know that there are certain flawed products that fail sooner and more than others. And for those exceptions should be made.

Its R8500 (6500+2000 replacement) for a watch in a year, the same damn watch - nothing different!

IMO - that sucks! Screwed with a blunt 'edge'

Since we are all being pedantic, if it was a year it would still be within the warranty. It's over the warranty period, therefore more than a year and therefore he would only spend R2000 this year. . .

Like somebody said earlier, the line has to be drawn at some stage.

What would the "just out of warranty" period be ? month 13, month 14, month 18 ?

That’s easy, the day after the warranty date expires is the first day of “out of warranty”.
