Leading the red Jersey...

I agree that this is a useless jersey to have... not to be funny but if we don't compare to the other teams (non-africa) then what is the use? there is very little of our local talent there or to put it another way...

I think we have built a race that we cannot compete in... be it monetary issues or just plain skill. Also seems like the tough economy has let down the local riders in terms of getting a sponsor to be able to ride the Epic.

I think I may get flogged for saying this..but the SA/Africa whatever it is called category may be doing SA riders more harm than good. ..they just have to test themselves against the guy they race week in and week out locally and not the very best..

Nah, I agree. It's lame and like a troos prys.

The last time a French person won the Tour de France was in 1985... Imagine if they introduced a 'best French rider' jersey... it would have to be brown because, well, it's a poo poo idea

interestingly it came in as it was an african race!

we used to have kenyans and rwandas right up there.

now if you look at the results, it's only really south african's under the absa african. maybe the international pricing has scared off our brothers north of the border

Hahahaha I was actually thinking of this when I wrote that!

I think the 'all africa' jersey is just a noddy badge. 'Well done for being here guys, this little red jersey is going to keep the locals coming back every year despite being absolutely nowhere near the front.'

Something for the locals to race for... but really it's just more hype in an already trumped up hype card.

I'm loving watching the top Euro guys race. It is absolutely insane how efficient and how fast they are

We have the talent, but no sponsors and they just disappear.  You'll probably have to compete in Europe on a regular basis to get close and the young guys don't have those opportunities. James Reid was what Alan Hatherly is now, winning XC and Marathon and he is not even racing anymore.  I think one of the main reason by Burry set such a amazing example, apart from being super talented, was that he had the backing of Specialized.  With that came the international opportunities and the mentorship from someone like a Christof Sauser.  Just look at Grotts, he's not the best MTB'er in the world, but yet he is leading the Epic purely because of Kulhavy, being his partner, and Sauser giving advice in the background.

Think there's so much more to South Africans not performing than just saying, we're not as good as the other guys.

I tend to agree with you, it is actually sad not seeing more Saffas racing for gold in their own back yard. I would like to be cheering them on, but how do you cheer for 15th place? at least our pros beat the weekend warriors in the local races. I do hope they step up next year.
