What does it take to get a sub 3?

I'm going to stir the pot a bit.

What does it take to get a sub 3 in a 100+ km road event?

Does training play a role, or is it being the right weight, or is it learning how to ride behind someones wheel?

Depends on the 100+km route. Some are so flat I aim for sub 2h30. But the main sub 3 races for me would be CTCT, Ride for Sight.

Yes you need to be fit.

Weather!!!!!!!! Wind!!!!!!

A lot of guys can wheel suck their way to a sub 3 no problem but whats the point of that? Rather do a sub 3 and at least do some work, even if it's just a handful of short pulls.

I think training and weight work hand in hand. If you training enough that you are able to be seeded well enough to be talking sub 3 then I think you should be fairly trim. I always aim to go into my main race(CTCT) at 65kilos but I can't spend the whole year at that weight. Its a dedicated diet from Jan to March. After that I am sitting at about 68/68 kilos.

Training (not gonna hold an avg of over 36km/h without some training)

Power to Weight ratio (to get you over the hills)

Peleton skills (wheel sucking)

Group dynamics (working well together)

Tactics (who to follow and when to go)

Knowledge of the route (when to sit and when to push so hard you see your ancestors)

Luck (mechanicals and crashes)

Weather and Wind (obviously)

Great list, only thing that I would add is your start group, ie. seeding. Easier to do it from BL compared to GL.

So do some races in the lead up to your target event to ensure your best possible start seeding.

+100 on start group. The further back you start the smaller and fewer the groups.

Then as others have said, depends on the race.

For instance, I've done a 2:40 for the original fast one (aka hyper to hyper), but could only do a sub 4 CTCT.

The flatter terrain and massive bunches in the H2H enabled me to do that. And even then, I got dropped at around the 80km mark because I had nothing left in me. So fitness is hugely important.

Commitment, training, luck, the correct seeding, weather, all play their part.

Ones to aim for:

CTCT (Argus) - weather dependant

Berg n Dale - lots of climbing

Ride4Sight - distance and race tactics

Wilro - distance

Satellite - good climbing

Knysna Oyster festival Road race - climbing

Amashova

Campus2Campus

Race4Victory - usually fast

Cansa Lost City - usually fast and rolling

Serengeti - Discontinued

Dome2Dome - discontinued

Forgot 1 thing , a good seeding

In my road racing years as a vet i was always able to maintain sub 3 or sub 2.30 on flat circuits purely by staying at the best fitness level i could afford with good training . I was able to train a minimum of 60 km daily with a

100km ride on the weekend .Our training group was all the same strength and all worked hard during training trying to better times and certain climbs that gave us a maximum workout . What Splat said is all relevant and gives the basis for good 100km time . I was never able to do a sub 2,30 on the R4S race as our club was the organizer and we had to be involved with arrangements on the day . We rode the route the previous week to determine marshaling hot spots and road condition and water point set ups .

Did Argus in 2012, no training, no wheel sucking, and my time sucked. Did Amashova in 2012 as well - also no training and no wheel sucking, being 20 minutes shy of a sub 4. Hoping to beat my Amashova time from 2012.
