Interesting  . . .  there were Racetec mats at +- 55 km into the race , the back-end of AL were properly in gutter on the right side of the road . . . i was bleeding through me eyeballs and only after we passed the mats realized  . . .  still got a time ?

Looking forward to Berge en Dale this weekend !

Ja saw that way too late also... I think there was quite a few long riders that cut koek as always and joined some slow short route buddies and still made sure they got reasonable good time for their group...

I heard a few discussing this afterwards in the coffee queue... pity they where not wearing race numbers...

While i get and understand pulling the plug early on a bad day in the saddle , what i will never comprehend is the desire to "beat" the system because you are to weak to complete what you signed up for and then brag about it. suppose it comes down to morals and integrity.

And apparently they chose Ride for Sight to test the new system because it is, to use their words, "a small race".

They used this system in Cape Town for the Stellenbosch Cycle Tour in December. I was not a fan, standing in a queue which was unnecessarily long as you must wait for numbers to be printed was a balls up. Pre printed means collect and leave, No hassles and hardly ever a queue. I cannot imagine seeing this happen with over 10 000 people each day over 3 days for the Cape Town Cycle Tour, especially with some guys popping in "quickly" during their lunch break to collect numbers and go back to work, There will be no "quickly" with 35 000 people collecting numbers and having to wait in queues...

So i recently started cycling as of the middle of December 2017 (MTB) and well the same bug that has gotten hold of everyone here is the same one that bit me, i entered the 62km ride with my cousin, he came up from Nelspruit with my new road bike on saturday, I got setup, we done a 32km testing sort of ride and then headed to the stadium to fetch our packages.

Sunday came and i was seeded in the FS group, we had a good start and pushed hard and managed to finish the 62km in a time of 1h49, a big thanks to the VC group that came past, we managed to sit at the back of them for a good 8km and our avg speed went thru the roof.

This was extremely mad fun and i thoroughly enjoyed my first ever race and look forward to many more.

Well done to all who competed.

I missed a mat at the Cape Town Cycle Tour aswell in Simons Town(wasn't sure if I should go back and go over the mat to be safe). At the end of the race I went to the organisers at the racetec van and explained the situation and they said its fine as I went over the other mats on the course.

What happened?

We had a good club ride back in GL, around 20 and all of us finished together in 3h38ish

Only heard one crash behind me just before Heidelberg. It was going to happen sooner or later as a couple of the guys rode all over the place

Was a massive bunch for the first 45km

I thought Gators were impenetrable. Green shards of glass taught me otherwise.

Interesting race. Started in CL and did the first hour at an average of 45km/h catching the front of BL in the process. My legs decided it was nap time going into Suikerbos but I see CL finished 3 min ahead of BL in the results so the front groups must have ridden together from there.

Considering the quality of roads compared to the fast one I was surprised with the number of accidents having ridden past or next to at least 4-5. One bad one with two gents not getting up just after the half way timing mat and one pointless one after the finish line because someone stopped in the middle of the road 50m after the line.

I was in front of BL, we missed the front turn off and the whole bunch had to turn around, from there no one wanted to work except 1 or 2 guys. When C caught us it was 1 huge mess up. I decided to sit in front and keep myself out of trouble. People crashed left right and center. I managed to finish in front with the guys. Lekker race overall

I suppose I have to share

I really love this race and it's the first time since I started cycling that I didn't do it. I was seriously miffed for missing out. The reason being my wife started to cycle and she really enjoys the road riding. I've had to resort to MTB   as we don't always have baby sitters for our kids.

I really wanted her to experience the 116 km race, she's done the 62 a few times.  It was awesome for her managed to keep up with her group of riders and came in strong. She said she never once felt like she couldn't manage (unlike the 947) They're not horribly fast, came in in 4:20 with 2 group punctures. But nontheless an awesome day out for her.

To top things off, she got a call from the organisers on Sat that she was selected for the R30k lucky draw and had to be there at 12:30. She got called up on stage, put her hand in a box and pulled out a piece of paper that said 'Winner"

She was absolutely delighted. Good bike ride and a lekker bonus

To be honest, a sprint finish will always be potentially dangerous, even if you place it on a wide, dead straight road.

Agree sprinting comes with risks but putting two 90 degree corners in the last 500m is asking for more trouble than necessary. How about putting the finish line on Jubilee road, 100m before turning left?

Ooh and no traffic cones please

How about not worrying about a finish that has been the same for 30 years.

You know the route beforehand, unless you are sprinting to win something, ease of and go safely, you are not losing more than 30 seconds. (sounds about the same as cyclists requesting cars to be patient behind them.)

I have seen more crashes in straight line sprints than in corner sprints.

Only been riding since Oct and still to heavy to put in any decent times, but was happy with what I managed.

Did the 62K for the first time, and as it was my first race of the year managed a 2:30 with a puncture and chain coming off to-boot.

Seeing my Average has been around the 21 - 22 Kph mark I was happy with a 24.5 average.

Now to get fitter and lose the weight and hopefully my times can come down and my averages can go up. :D

That’s exactly what I did, sit up and get to run/ride another day.

I took the inside line going into the left hand corner know that at high speed, on patchy rods there are bound to be guys that overcook the corner - and that’s exactly what happened... guys hammered the brakes, some even went off the road whereas I was able to cruise over the line safely, with the bonus of being inside the top 10 of the group.

I was wondering the same thing.

Seems a lot saver option.  Less fun though.

So that's probably why CL managed to catch BL? Which turn did you misjudge exactly?
