Hardtail Trail Bike Tyre Combo

Hey guys,

On my new Hardtail Trail Bike I'm looking at which tyres to fit front and rear.

I want a combo for most terrain, don;t have the luxury of changing tyres weekly. I will be riding trails with some hard pack, and also soft / wet dirt.

I'm looking at:

Front - Maxxis Minion DHF

Rear - Maxxis Ardent/Forecaster/Minion DHF

I'm reading that a lot of racers who use Minions, use them both front and rear, but I'm wondering if the Minion wouldn't be too harsh as a rear tyre? I don't really know, I have never had Minions.

Any thoughts?

Are you not thinking of the Minion DHR II for the rear?

Minion DHF or DHR2 front (DHR works well as a front, according to Andrew Savage @ stoke) and an Aggressor at the rear.

Or.... My personal favourite. Magic Mary front, Spaz Slaughter rear. LOVE that combo.

Mary Front, Slaughter GRID (2.6 now available) out back.

Have ridden a few. Butcher, Aggressor, Ibex, DHRII....not a fan of many of them. Mary grips better than the Butcher, Ibex and DHRII as a front. Slaughter corners nicer and rolls better than the others and I find the GRID sidewall holds up well.

From those you list.

DHF or DHR up front ... used both in 26'er format and both were good .. may lean more to the DHR on the front.

Rear, been using the Ardent, and it has been a little skittish, would give the Aggressor a spin out back ... and have been considering this myself.

My combo for the next set of tyres is DHF/R on the front and Aggressor on the rear.

Have used a purgatory on the rear and DHF combo on an all mountain HT with good results too.

Ardents only work on hero dirt. A little too dry or a little too wet and you're on your ear.

OP - what rims?

a 2.6 Slaughter at the back makes sense, cos low pressure  = comfy. But if you're on 25mm or less it'll roll right off.

I have minion dhf 2.3 (front) and dhr 2.3 (rear) on the spare set of 29er wheels for my plus bike. Really impressed with grip. Don’t ride far enough for the extra rollng resistance to be an issue.

Not sure many guys here actually thought about your question very well. Firstly what hardtail did you buy ? Secondly ( and assumed yes by most here ) are you riding boost sized hubs ? What is the internal width of the rims you have ? Wheel size ?

Many of the tyre options suggested might not even fit on your bike.

Not entirely true.

He said "trail hardtail" - that implies an ht with 120mm or more travel at the front and slack angles.

Boost is a marketing scam masquerading as a technological panacea, and there is tons of clearance on most frames for tyres up to 2.6. Certainly a 2.4/2.5 maxxis and 2.35 schwalbe will fit all forks and rear triangles with very few exceptions. Some of those exceptions even being boost. You may need to start thinking about clearance if you get the new 2.6 options but afaik the 2.6 minion isn't available yet. All the above tyres are available in 650&29. Irrelevant.

Wheel size.... He's considering dhf's which means it's a sixer, niner or six fiddy. Not a plus. Irrelevant

Internal rim width is the only real consideration here. But even then all the recommended tyres will work on sub 25mm rims, just not as well as they have a potential to on rims over 25mm. And then, before 25mm was the new narrow, these tyres were all being run on rims of between 19&25mm wide. Heck, even the great DEEMAX was 23mm wide

So. I think you'll find we considered all you claim us not to have.

+1 for aggressor at the back.

A lot of grip, but with a very predictable break away point. [emoji108]

My current combo is an Ibex front with an Aggressor rear.

Thanx everyone for your thorough responses. It helps to come to a community like this.

I am having Wayne over at Rapide build me a wheelset, and I'm yet to decide if I want the 25mm or 30mm Internal rim width. My frame has clearance for up to 2.4 tyres on 29er wheels.

Currently I am leaning towards the 25mm Rims with Minion DHF 2.3 Front and Aggressor 2.3 Rear.

This is what I feel will give me the best all purpose combo for the type of riding I 1.) Want to do and 2.) Will do most of the time. Hehehe

Can anybody comment on any reason for me to go for the 30mm rims?
