I would say that this was not done by a Mtb'er. This trail traditionally was used by runners/dog walkers/pedestrians and now all of a sudden it got blocked on request of the new owners/developers. Someone must have stripped his mo*r and decided to vandalize the lock.

If we lose this access point, there will be no more Protea corridor.

Which would be a huge loss

And this IS a key entry point for the Bellville and Brackenfell club members.

Route / distance wise the Traverse does much the same ... except it closes way too early to be of use for those of us riding after work....

Going to be a sad day when / if we loose Protea Corridor.

Then again ... do we have any idea what fate awaits Bloemendal ?  Do hope I missed a good news message on the future of this facilty once the new owners settle in ....

Change is part if life .... still sucks ... hoping for the best outcome on both of these ...

Has it been sold?

It was on auction a few months ago.

EDIT - Google notes issues with that auction and sale .... apparently being re-listed ....

I vaguely recall reading an offer was made during the auction. If memory serves the reserve was around 250 bar. I'm guessing the offers were well below that.

I assume the reason behind the fence is to stop a repeat of squatters on the land.

Surely given the size and reach of the club with the permission of the owners a fence can be erected sandwiching the corridor between the existing vineyards office complex fence and a new one. This could ensure continued access to the corridor not only for the club but also throw a bone for the dog walkers and runners.

This makes sense, practically.

Not as if anything (house or office) can be built between the river and the existing office block fence.

As you say .... these are measures to stop squatters ... the irony being that once squatters take over we cant cycle or run there due to safety .... either way we loose out if a safe corridor is not established

The problem is as I saw this morning, members are leaving this new gate unlocked for non members to access this corridor. We caught 2 non members this morning entering the gate and told they told us the rider ahead of them left the gate open and told them they can enter through there. When we explained the reason they couldn't ride the corridor without being a member they understood and went on the road around to Bloemendal. Please guys... Keep the gate locked as requested by the club.
