You're writing as if motorists are a completely different species.

Virtually all cyclists are motorists. Ease up on the generalizations.

I am not suggesting that motorists are a different species of even that cyclists aren't also motorists.

it is just that as a decision maker, often sub-consiously so, we don't fully inform our decisions on the risk we pose to others whereas we have evolved to instinctively recognise the risks our choices pose to us.

But that is a discussion for a different forum. Let us keep this to Flemish Lion

Bad news. Hope Tijl is OK. And his little 'uns and Mrs T are coping.

Don't assume he was doing a Strava segment, he was apparently on his MTB on the road. And anyway, what diffs would it make.

He was on his Mtb...

There are pics of the incident on our local FB forum. The position of the vehicle is very odd, looks like the driver saw him, tried to quickly cut the corner in front of him, and not realizing his speed, caused the collision. Definitely driver error, and my opinion not a case of 'Oh I didn't see him'! I don't think Tijl would have even had the slightest chance to touch brakes or take evasive action. This disregard to cyclists safety infuriates me.

Heal up buddy, thinking of you all the time!

My apologies to all and a full retraction of the above statement, I do not want to suggest the driver was at fault. From witnesses reports there was possibly another vehicle indirectly involved which resulted in a head-on collisions between Tijl and this vehicle.

And there is actually a study that proves it and this contributes to the fact that motorists often simply does not see cyclists and bikers because of this risk that they do not share in a car.

I cycle, used to motorcycle and have always been a motorist. Having been a biker and still a cyclist informs my driving today. In other words I am aware of the vulnerability of a cyclist or biker on the roads and try at all times to drive accordingly.

Most motorists are not cyclists or bikers and therein lies the problem.

Perceived risk definitely plays a role.

If an 18-wheeler truck is piling down the hill compared to a normal car or cyclist, I know for sure as a driver in my sedan I would subconsciously think three times before taking a chance with the lorry where I am not too sure whether the car or cyclist would enjoy that same consideration.

Disclaimer: I have been on a bike all my life, riding to the shop for milk and bread as a laaitie, so I try to do my best with regards to being accommodating to cyclists and bikers.

Sorry to hear about your injury FL, hope you heal up soon.

All these accident reports in the last two weeks are making me very reluctant to go out on the road on my own on the road bike.

Wishing you a speedy recovery Flemish. Get strong soon brother.
