Who on this forum would want to do the Epic ROUTE :

- for a MUCH reduced entrance fee

- none of the tv and other glamour ...

- NO prize money

- but purely for the opportunity to experience a stunning ride and route .....

I certainly know a number of riders that would LOVE to do this.

dare I say a good ride has been hi-jacked by sponsors and glamour ....

I think you will find that all the best bits are open to the public - very few entities spend R1000's  on singletrack for it to be ridden once a year (Piket-bo Berg is just about the only exception to that rule I can think of right now)

+ lots of single day and smaller stage races use Epic or Ex-Epic routes nowadays

Epic certainly has no exclusive right to experience great mtb'ing in the WC.

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I did a search but nothing came up.

Is it just me or is the prize money a slap in the face for all professionals? Compared to rugby and golf, R200k is really low for the winners!

Most of the rugby, cricket, football players earnings also come from salaries and deals and not prize money, just like cycling.

Golf and tennis seem like the only real main streams that are price money focused, even though the top in those sports will also get more from deals.

the whole event is a marketing exercize and money maker for the organizers and sponsors. ABSA schmooze the day tripper wealthy business people for deals...

I'm pretty sure Lance Armstrong didn't win at all costs for the money... I'm pretty sure it was to win.

I can't see more prize money open a door to more doping. To be fair the costs of a full pro team to come out and race this thing would probably exceed a million bucks. 4 x riders, flights, bikes, accommodation, food, mechanics, consumables, kit, support staff, mini vans, cars, branding etc....

So no, the prize money probably isn't what brings the guys here... UCI points, escape from Euro winter, awesome exposure for the brands and teams.. but mostly UCI points

$16K prize money remains a joke

$16K prize money remains a joke

This is true

Okes probably need to take it up with the Chinese suits who have probably never sat on a bike ever... but have marketed and grown the hell out of the IM brand.

i don't think anybody really cares about the prize money for the epic...  Seeing that its an R100k investment to ride it, I don't see how well it's going to go down to make the normal folk pay even more so that one  oke can buy himself a yact with his winnings...

cyclists need to get their money from their contracts i.e. salaries.  I would love a R200k bonus in my job, so I think that amount is a fair proposition.

Prize money is related to spectator support for different sports.

So lets say tennis, rugby, boxing or football, have a massive appeal to the general public in terms of support for individuals or teams.

Other than the big races like the tour or the giro there isnt really mass interest in other cycling events that brings in big TV screening rights deals.

Reckon the tv rights drive the the prize money and competitor pay packets.

Tv rights values are driven by public appetite for the event.

No public appetite = no big cash.
