Doubling of cholesterol levels in only 11 months - chlorinated pools?

Last night I trolled the internet again .. :)

And found the following on another forum - US Masters swimming forum

http://forums.usms.org/showthread.php?12301-Body-composition-and-swimming

Further into the page she gives a more complete picture of her history/results.

The lady has 13 years of unexplained LDL cholesterol levels hiking when swimming more and lowering when swimming less.

There is obviously many variables, but Dr. Price's book might be an explanation for her results.

If she was swimming more then odds are that she was eating more too.

And she would have been under additional training stress and possibly more life stress from fitting it all in. And there are probably a 100 other factors.

You can't look too far into a case report since it is uncontrolled . Basic scientific technique.

Eddie

In the 50 years since Price wrote his book, NO scientific randomised, double blind research has managed to show that his "findings" are valid.

Hanging onto what is bogus, can be dangerous; look at the damage the anti-vaccination lobby caused. Trolling the internet to validate your hypothesis will always give you the answers you would like to believe, even if you believe the world is flat.

Hi Eddy

I hear you. My main objective was to find out whether anyone else on the hub had experienced similar results.

I know there is many variables, ... even if Price's proposition holds some truth, ..... the chlorine content in each pool will differ.

I'll keep an eye on my cholesterol intake and go for another check-up in 3 months. Hopefully the anomaly would have corrected itself by then.

You're not getting it. There is no 'truth'.

There is no evidence that this bloke's hypothesis is scientifically sound.

You want to believe.

The reality is that there's a bunch of explanations, including that any increase in exercise (swimming, running, cycling, gyming, whatever) could have the same effect.

The reason for that could be the sports drinks or recovery shakes she was using, it could simply be a hormonal reaction to stress (exercise stresses the body)...

Or it could have been blind luck.

What you don't want to do is:

"unexplained" => "the price is right."

I think you should really do 2 things:

1 - google the health effects of every single chemical they put in pools - chlorine is not the only potentially toxic thing in the water.. there are plenty of agents that might be able to be linked.

2 - get your bloods redone... this is a standard approach in medicine - when something looks odd - RETEST - usually before making the patient panic... it's not like labs are infallible - not by any means - lab tests can easily have errors of significant margins.

then lets see.

If there was a smattering of truth in the title of this thread I would be dead. I swim at Ellis Park pool often and about 2 hours after the pool has been dosed with chlorine. Anyone can write any BS on the internet at anytime. Seriously people, think, and spend less time on the internet.

I grew up in a place where the tap water was heavily chlorinated. Also swam in the municipal pool which was treated every day with massive doses of chlorine. To this day my cholesterol is normal to low. Anecdote that!

Thank you for the post. I was hoping to get a bit more information.

Do you swim there +-3hours a week, have you done so continuously for the last 10 months. Have you had a cholesterol check in the last month?

I am interested in data supporting or refuting Dr. Price's proposition. He purports that the continual scarring of the arteries/veins caused by the chlorine, and the cholesterol layering the scars as the cause for the high LDL cholestrol.

Breaking the cycle with weeks of no swimming, or swimming in open water will allow the arteries to heal and cholesterol levels to lower.

So have I. Up to before I started swimming 3 hours a week in chlorinated pools for triathlon training I had 15 years of very low cholesterol levels.

Sounds to me that you are convinced and will block out and ignore any other theories... selective reading to fit what you want it to be..  An yes I swim 3hrs+ in a pool without elevated cholesterol as am also a triathlete.

Edit:  It is probably due to a combination of things and most likely the increase in carbs for all the training needed

You won't find any supporting his hypothesis. As many people have said before, his hypothesis has been refuted many times.

You are a prime example of confirmation bias in action.
