Happened to be driving from Fourways to Parktown this morning so took a spin on the route. Homestaed, Jan Smuts to Hyde Park and past the zoo will have a lot of people very miserable.

Indeed, a few tough hills on this ride,

Kakked off on old route, so situation normal this way too.

Its all good.

Did a recce loop yesterday.

Did not think Jan Smuts section was too bad but amount of climbing after the racetrack took me by surprise. A lot of suffering gonna be happening out Kyalami way!!!

Or as the poets would say: Don't think you're done when you come of the M1!!

21km/h headwind on the N1 and past Kyalami.

Make sure you find a group by the time you kit Nelson Mandela Bridge.

PS. Very thankful for my 6AM start time, those late starters are going to bake properly! Condolences

We did the Woodmead - Summit Drive section last weekend and the Douglasdale to Rosebank section yesterday.

I felt that the section passed Kyalami ( without even the race track) was harder.

First time on a road bike since 2012 and I was thinking that I am not strong enough anymore for a standard crankset. Or maybe I have adapted too well to the wide range on my mtb

I actually went past the guy just after he had fallen over. It was at around the 40 km mark. By the time I got there, around five people were already clustered about him trying to help him and had called for the medic. The medic was just arriving. By that time of the day, the temperatures were already pretty high. My Garmin tells me that out in the open where we were riding, we were then already approaching 39°C. I had a look at his profile on Racetec and while one cannot be absolutely sure based just on that data, by the look of it, this was his first 55 km ride/race. Previously his longest race was a 34 km race and before that 25 km races. I am inordinately saddened. The devil with these races is that the most vulnerable/weakest riders are usually started later in the day, meaning that they get the hottest times, placing them at even greater risk than would otherwise be the case.

RIP fellow rider.

Maybe the organisers of the "big" races should consider doing something similar to that of the popular stage races where they have 3 events. They can maybe have 2 races and split the field over the Saturday and Sunday. That way they can still start the slower riders early.

I would imagine road closure of that kind over 2 days would be difficult to secure?
