Netwerk24 Cycling related News and Views - Should cyclists be allowed on the roads?

South Africa drivers are crap. Plain and straight. Too many drunk drivers, too many people texting or selfing while driving. Speeding, ignoring road signs and markings. Too many without training or an inkling of common sense. Truck drivers who shouldn't be in charge of a wheelbarrow let alone a great big fully loaded lorry....

In a world that is rapidly exhausting resources we should be encouraging riders to make an effort to get out there and ride to where they need to go. Saves resources, keeps you fit and generally makes for a happy person...

Sadly in this lawless land anytime you take to the roads, on a bike or in a car, it may well be your last trip....

Remember, there is a whole subsection of cyclists commuters, where that mode of transport is their main one. They brave the cold, sometimes wet , cold and dark to get to work and back.

They do not own lights, nor the means to obtain decent lights, and like recreational cyclists, are offered no safety from infrastructure. (broadly speaking)

It's an interesting circular argument this - pretty much every rider on here is also a driver so are "we" the "they"?

Plus I think the "they're crap" goes beyond just driving. Cyclists are also pretty crap. So are politicians, businessmen, religious leaders etc.

The biggest problem in SA is that the social contract has been broken - it's each man for himself (and woman for herself of course).

Ja, I didn't want to generalise too much!! But you are right, I think SA drivers just get away with too much and the local pork force don't care either so its just a 'round and round we go' scenario!

I have always had a couple of thought on road safety:

1. It should be taught at schools from primary school level, (theory and safety)

2. Your drivers test needs to include a night time test and a wet road stop.

3. Truck drivers need to do two parts: You learn on an unladen truck for one half of the test and then have to complete the second part of the test with a fully loaded truck and trailer. Maybe even have them progress through different load tonnages until they are certified at a max load rating.

I love driving and was/still am a bit of a petrol head. That said, the driving I like is not the commute I do every day sometimes in thick traffic. If I lived closer to the office or if their was a safe route to ride a bike, I'd seriously consider cycling some of the time. As it stands, its virtually a no go from a time and safety perspective. Such a pity. I could save a fortune in petrol.

Truth be told we as cyclist have just as much right to use the road as cars. It's just those ash##### that don't cycle that feel bicycles dot belong on road. LONG LIVE CYCLING!!!!!!!!!

The scary thing about this type of retarded inflammatory article is that people's collective stupidity allows these things to gain traction and the next thing you know it's being debated in parliament.

YES, provided they follow the rules,,, just like everyone else.

Us cyclists should also pay a bicycle licence ( like we used to ). That way we would be seen as  contributing and therefore give us the right to use public roads............imho !!

That's one argument against cyclists.

Then there are the - listen carefully - eleventy five hundred and ninety thousand one hundred and sixty one million others.

Not going to happen.
