Bicycling Magazine Loss of Values

Well, I have 3 kids under age 10. They've recently picked up on the middle-finger thing from other kids, and it took a couple of slaps against the head to get them to stop running around zapping each other and other people. They often page through my bike magazines, so the last thing I want now is for them to see how cool it is when cyclists do it.

I also wouldn't enjoy turning a page in a bike mag and there's a guy saying "well hello, f*ck you"

Hope they don't watch cycling on TV either.. some erm riders sometimes have crude victory celebrations and use crude language in live TV, Tommy D I am talking to you.. and sometimes the cameraman doesn't pan away quick enough and we see some willies on TV...and sometimes teammates even zap each other ????

You can't shield them from everything all the time, you can teach them to not use crude language or gestures.

Also why is anyone still buying the bicycling magazine.

should terms like "bike porn" be banned as well - have the magazines sealed in plastic like the good old days.

Magazine sales would go up if they did that.. smart idea that..

I have to agree, printing the actual word **** on the hub will see **** appear in it's place.

They need people to proofread before printing and I would expect that Bicycling missed this one, as they just did a copy/paste from the article.

The zap signs are also just lazy, doesn't add much to the article.

also, OP are you related to the owners of RIDE magazine as you share the surname?

Advocates slapping kids. Dislikes swear words in magazines. Interesting dynamic.

Honestly though, if your biggest concern is your kids seeing a pic like that, you are doing a superb job in wrapping them up in cotton.

Or

You are in for a beeeeeg surprise

Should he have asked the child to stop doing it nicely so as not to hurt his feelings and damage his humanity?>

Feeling rather apathetic...  I've stopped reading the Bicycling magazine a long time ago, not as much because I've noticed the "loss of values", but rather because I noticed a loss in value!

OP might or might not have a point, depending on moral values or lack thereof...

To each his own.

This thread is amazing!

Isn't it exhausting being SO offended by everything?

Look, I'm not saying it's right. I read that Bogan article and immediately felt 46.7% dumber and robbed of 7 minutes of my time. But offended? Insulted? Do I fear that rude hand gestures and the tone of the article will ruin children?

Not really... only that I hope kids don't read that and think 'rad, lets grow up in an affluent house just to play at being trash'.... that's a little sad.

Anyway, OP, Jan, bro, boet, keep your pants on, have another boganbrew, grow a mullet and do an editorial in the family magazine next month on how far some other magazines have fallen.

Start a printed media mud slinging contest.... that way you can keep the dinosaurs relevant for another few months....

Hi PS. I came here as I received no response from the magazine or it`s editor after having written them twice in the space of a week. Not even a receipt to say that they are attending to my mail or so... I therefor get the impression that they consider my objection as trivial.

I think it is trivial.

I can give your numerous examples of family rated movies and TV shows with swearing, sex and yes, zap signs. Like it or not... Welcome to the 21st century

Shock horror. Tell kid off. Kid stops doing it. What a snowflake, hippy, left wing, liberal approach. Unheard of.

OP, I think you are taking the image out of context, he was probably just getting ready to put his glasses on like Ex-President Zuma.

It's a great photo, nicely composed to show the grit needed to ride a bike  ;)
