Sjoe thats bad...strongs and speedy recovery [emoji106]

I was taken out by a student driver on Sunday morning in Dorp Street, Stellenbosch and this just once again made me think of how lucky I was to walk away with no serious injuries and no damage to the bike [emoji106] .

Hope you klapped that student (if it was a male)

Surprise surprise... taxi was at fault. Don’t think it’s much of a jump when a taxi is involved, not even a hop, it’s always in the wrong.

Pieterse said Burger, 37, was on a training ride early this morning when a minibus taxi drove through a red traffic light and hit her side-on.

“She suffered two punctured lungs, slight bleeding on the brain, a broken collarbone and all her ribs are broken on her left side,” Pieterse told In the Bunch today.

Lock him up!

Just relieved she's alive ,hope she recovers 100% physically and mentally.

With regards to riding through intersections in the dark, always assume every car is not going to stop. I don't even drive past one at night a

Without slowing down to make sure no bozo is trying to kill me.

only at night?

up in JHB taxi's jump lights as a norm in broad daylight. i've even seen it being done in front of metro cops.

In fact, with so little law enforcement up here i'm starting to see a lot of people copying them.

the adopted attitude is, if they can do it and get away with it, so can i.

if you get caught its your bad luck for finding the only cop who cares in a 100km radius - but more likely one that feels they can get some extra bribe pocket money.

i slow down at every single intersection. all the time. always.

its to common an occurrence now to see a T bone accident due to cars jumping lights.

back to the topic at hand.

really horrible news. heal up well Lynette

Exactly what I was thinking, however the accident did happen at an intersection so perhaps she was in a right hand lane turning? Taxi could also have been driving on the pavement?

Cycling in the dark? Not that she should not have been but it all adds to the risks of cycling on the roads in a city, especially in this country.

Either way looks like she took quite a bang, all the best to her, hope she makes a speedy recovery.

You are far more visible at night than in day. The flashing red light also pulls more attention to the driver to tell him to stay clear of it. We can deliberate what is more safer but the stats indicate more accidents during day time.

To even stipulate/ mention that she was in the right lane just tells me you trying to play devils advocate or back the taxi driver. Rather support our fellow cyclist as we could also be in ICU now!!!

I never said the taxi was innocent it just doesn't help going around hating every taxi on the road because they just don't care and seems to like it if we get upset at them and just stressing ourselves out. Try cutting them off and just sit there and smile and see how they explode (obviously in a car not a bicycle)

Oh gosh, this is terrible!  Get well soon, Lynette.  I hope you are on your way to a full and uneventful recovery.

Not trying to add fuel to the fire, but as for cycling on a road, I have been shown the utmost respect by MANY taxis, MANY trucks and MANY motorists.  A vehicle doesn't have a will of its own.  It comes down to the person operating it.  There will be those who are drunk, sleepy, inept or just aggressive towards cyclists in general - who knows what they will be driving?
