Some perspective. Its not just cyclists but all road users who suffer because of the negligent driving on our roads mostly its another car or sometimes even a pedestrian. I heard the other day of a runner, a young woman, hit by a car running down Rhodes Drive at the Kirstenbosch end. Car swerved to avoid an oncoming driver who had overtaken when unsafe to do so and hit her. The woman lost her leg. A life shattered because some d%*s was in a hurry. This kind of thing makes me think, a lot. I've just downloaded the Discovery Insure driving app. My first drive scored 93 but I did have two speeding incidents...

I am sitting on 100 for the month, I dont drive a lot though. Also learnt where the funnies are on the app, like on ramps are 60km/h not 80 etc.

Had the one spot in Pretoria where I always got a red mark for doing 120 in a 60 zone.   The problem is I was on a highway bridge that crossed over a urban road (60) which it interpreted I was on.  Sent a few e-mails but gave up on it.  My score was good in general.

So sad to read this - RIP to the cyclist :(

Couldn't agree more with what you say. On any given day my dashcam footage is full of people not adhering to the rules of the road. I sometimes wonder if I am literally the only person who can read speed limit signs as almost nobody seems to stick to the speed limit anymore? So many people seem to be in such a rush everywhere these days and I often wonder if they even know why they're rushing other than for the sake of it. There also seems to be an attitude of disdain towards people doing the speed limit judging by the number of cars that stick to my rear bumper on a daily basis, as if they have more right to the road than I do. Much the same with dangerous overtaking. Sadly, as I say, from my perspective this seems to be how most people drive these days.

Thanks Dekker, FootballingCyclist, marko35s etc for the info.

Sitting at the end of an internet connection I am not privy to the details, notably that the car was on the opposite end of the road. So yes, my question has zero relevance.

Apparently asking questions to establish facts is not the best idea and only results in name calling.

Even if the driver was approaching from the same side of the road and the group were riding two abreast. The driver by law still has to pass at a safe distance!

When you started your... "question"... you used a phrase that was insinuating guilt on cyclists' part. It not surprising that your question was unwelcome!  You should look up the definition of 'playing devil's advocate' and if you hate doing something, then don't do it!

I hope that you're not driving the speed limit in the right hand lane because that's probably why you have the problem of dangerous  overtaking.

oops :offtopic:  and  advocate

Why should people breaking the speed limit be more entitled to use the roads than those who abide by the law? To answer your question, though, I don’t sit in the right hand lane and hold everyone up, for the exact reason you mentioned – I feel the sheer impatience (and ignorance) of a lot of drivers these days will end up putting lives in danger by trying to overtake someone who did happen to be in the right hand lane at 120km/h. I do tend to feel that the sense of entitlement and nonchalant attitude towards the rules of the road (speeding was just the example I used, but it is more the mindset that irks me) is more indicative of a broader attitude that many people seem to have these days – “I’m more important than that driver”, “me getting in front of that car is more important than our collective safety”, “me getting to my destination is more important than the other driver getting to theirs”, “I won’t let that car that’s indicating in because how dare they try get in front of me”. Wouldn’t driving be so much nicer (and safer) if we were all just a bit more considerate of others?

But, as you mentioned, not the topic to go into this

Rolled for 4 hrs yesterday and the majority of my thoughts were reflecting on this incident.

I remember buying a mountain bike and staying off the road for as much as possible with training efforts after the passing of a friend from A bunch, Randall February, after he was killed by a car ignoring red lights.

Then I started to buy high-vis clothing and bigger lights, more than before, and train with groups on the weekends. I find the roads are more peaceful during the week in the times and places where I roll.

Do what you can to be safe out there, Fellow cyclists.

Ride In Peace, man.

RIP fellow cyclist...

A tragedy indeed..

Randall, was a friend and Colleague of mine and I had a similar reaction. But just to give all hope out there that sometimes there is justice, not that it brings back anyone but does provide some closure. Not Sure if this was widely Publicized but the driver that killed Randall was found guilty and jailed.

See note below from the police officer involved.

Yeah, I saw that. Was flippin happy at the verdict.

@reflexus - my sincere condolences. I've lost too many friends to incidents like this, and my thoughts go out to you and the ones left behind after this tragic incident.

On a lighter note, and not at all detracting from Randall's untimely departure (please, I mean no disrespect whatsoever) but since I saw the Hub vloek meter attack the message, I cannot help but how the officer managed to get to the house on his night s h i t.

This is why me and my family do not do any more early morning rides on roads around here.

Condolences to family and all the rider's riding buddies. The driver should absolutely be charged.

Agree fully. The most dangerous time to be on the road
