Finally, just a small thing to note but new RCS owner Urbano Cairo was at the race, as he has been for quite a few days now. He’s a football fanatic, a business tycoon and maybe heading for politics one day but for now he seems fascinated by the Giro, an asset he’s recently acquired.

didn't know that

A very wealthy man

He is Chairman of Torino FC and I am pretty sure his one business owns majority Torino shares

Saw the building rumour that Ineos has Carapaz wrapped up already for next year. With Froome, Gee, Bernal and then Sitakov, Sosa, Hart et all as works in progress there just aren't enough GT's to go around that impressive roster.

depending on what happens this week, he might find his demand and therefore price going up accordingly. (partially because they were all watching landa when he went up the road)

Which is silly as Carapaz was 4th last year and is carrying really decent form in 2019.

random question while the stage needs to get going

...on the como stage tolhoek rode a whole movistar bike in(once they swapped pedals for him).

Didn't richie get time penalties for taking a wheel from orica a few years back(yes he did 2mins - 2015)?

double standards, or do rules not apply to domestiques?

Or Dave B has played a blinder as he’s had Carapaz signature on the contract for well over 8 months. Unless it was stipulated then this win (if he does) won’t change what’s in black and white with is scrawl on.

Would have loved to be the spectator that got that jacket in the face... but probably wouldn't fit anyway...

Would probably fit a 10 y/o. He's a small guy that. The podium girls look rather tall next to him. They probably ask each other "do I look big next to him?"

The interview I heard with the Jumbo DS was yes they are technically liable for a fine but it hadn't been applied by UCI despite the incident being reported.  I guess a loan bike to get a "low level non contender"  domestique home before cutoff can be overlooked

I thought Porte was penalized because he received the bike from another rider, where as Tolhoek received the bike from the team car, so the Movistar team made a decision to assist, not a single rider.

Apparently that makes a difference..... cycling laws/rules are weird

Roglic didn't look like he had fast enough legs yesterday. Never mind tactics or the TT, it looked he couldn't spin.

Once they got off the steep stuff he looked strong again. Maybe he is feeling the crash a bit more than he lets on or perhaps he still has a couple of years before he properly transitions into a genuine 3 week Grand Tour GC contender, or just a bad day.

The Mortirollo is brutal and he felt it yesterday.

Consider his physical build  vs the other contenders and then ask yourself did the stage really suit him? I think it didn't. He's got power but he's not a climber. Carapaz and Nibali are tradionally better climbers.

The question is how much damage did they do to his ability to recover when they head back into terrain that suits him better?

Yet again, no TDD riders in the break

That is a special skill to avoid the break so badly today. One of the podcasts were were thinking of trying to get an interview with Doug Ryder to find out what the issue was. I'm guessing he'll probably want to turn that one down. That said, Ineos have been pretty absent fr the giro as well as AG2R so it's not just a TDD thing.

Your runners and riders for today.
