Dear mountain bikers.. from trail runners

A dog on a leash is more dangerous and unpredictable then a dog off the leash. They're more defensive and protective. I prefer them off the leash and just slow down and speak to them in a nice friendly voice. Maybe 1in100 dogs are dangerous if this the approach and if its a total freak the owners will generally keep them muzzled

Except that logically, you are still safer on your bike with them leashed because they can't chase you and either bite or cause a crash. On a narrow trail it doesnt make much difference of course but in your typical green belt scenario we have in CT, the trails are wide...

I agree with your approach which is exact;y what I do. The owners warm to you the moment you speak nicely to their smelly child.

1 in a 100? 2 out of 2 of my dobies are safer, limited and predictable on a leash. The dog can only pull as hard as they can hold their breath for anyways - the whole point behind choker leashes, but of course not everyone uses them and also not everyone walks teenanger sized dogs

Why don't you just use a dog harness instead of a choker....hate those things...

Because I'll turn into a a sled if I use a harness on my 45kg excited 8month old Bouvier puppy.

We'll get to the point where he can walk with a harness. One day. Hopefully I can use him to carry my groceries like this one day.

Interesting. Makes sense. Kinda. Esp on narrow trail.

because a harness isn't a choker...¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The choker doesn't activate unless the dog tries to aggressively pull away, so as long as they stick to your side, they're less encumbered than they'd be with a full harness too.

sorry for the dogs as they will have to be put down due to owner negligence and sorry for the victim as he suffered because of idiots keeping dogs they don't bother looking after properly..why can't people keep gates shut and locked and fences high and strong enough to keep the dogs in....sadly south Africa is teeming with idiots who shouldn't own animals at all....

irresponsible owners irritate the s&&* out of me.

walked in the local park with my GSD on a leash. He is trained but he also has high prey drive and very protective over my wife. so he's not to be messed with.

lady walking in the park with 3 dogs off the leash. i don't mind this....many folks do this but please know your dog and be in control of your dog! i know my GSD goes bos (protection mode) so i just dont take the chance with other dogs around.

one of her dogs speeds off aggressively towards my GSD with lady shouting for dog to come back. If she knew the dog she would know that he was in a zone gunning for my dog so dog ignores lady's plea....duh (wtf - the lady didnt bother to even run across - about 200m away).

So i pull my dog back on a very short leash as i know he's going to fight with the dog with the aim of protecting my wife who is next to me (and obviously scared of this large weimaraner x - i think it was - coming at her). At some point, when they were fact to face, i did this at the expense of my poor dog as now this dog has the advantage with full range of movement and manage to get a small bite in before i jumped in (happening at my feet).

At this point my protection mode came in and i actually flung a few missed kicks at the dog who bit on my shoe but eventually ran away (shouted voetsek so many times my wife couldn't stop laughing after). Reminder her of that Rock movie.

all the while lady standing - didnt move an inch closer - calling her dog  :cursing:

lady shrugs her shoulders. What p&*ssed me off is that it seems that she didnt have a leash at all!

i was most upset with myself as i actually put my own dogs life in danger by holding him up with the leash like i did. its like i tied one hand tied behind his back. So if dog invades his space let him protect himself.

I'm just concerned that one day its not going to end well for one of her dogs if this continues. Know your dog! my view is if you are not sure play it safe and put him/her on a leash.

Sorry you had to experience that. Had a similar incident  years ago. Another dog came charging, and mine was on a leash with a choker. Also tried to avoid an incident but the other dog bit first, got my dog on the buttock. The owner came running over freed his dog and his dog lunged again, at this point my dog basically ended other dog. The chocker didnt help to control the dog either. Was a very sad day.

Ya you get those dogs that see the other dog at a disadvantage and then they come in looking for trouble. IME thy are the minority but the bigger problem is their owners who haven't a cooking clue.

I've got two GS. They're very friendly to other dogs and people if off the leash but the one is not so friendly on the leash because she does not like being at a disadvantage. She's highly protective of my youngest daughter so when we walk shes with my daughter. Any dog that comes close gets a PK. Now you get these highly strung breeds e.g. Weimeraner's who like to come looking for K8k. And the owners are juts as highly strung. they panic dog panics and trouble happens.

In the 12 years I've been walking my dogs in Tokai Forest I've only ever had trouble with Jack Russells and Weimeraners. timid dogs I tend to be able to spot a mile off and keep well clear so they don;t feel threatened

So just to get back on track.

Just use your bell

Or call well in advance and trail runner now dog will step aside and let you pass on your way.

Very simple and civil.

No need to shout or bark.
