Interesting thread, I can add my experience to this ..I bought the tomtom heart rate and audio watch which had almost everything I needed from a sports tracking watch ..but there was just something missing..I loved the Fenix watch ..it made me so jas..lol..I know sounds silly. The sad reality is whenever I'd see someone with one on their arm I would go green with envy..and in my mind I would try justify that my watch did everything the Fenix could do..anyway come Christmas 2018 I figured stuff this ..I work hard can't afford it really but took the plunge and bought the 5x
..omg the best decision I could HV done..besides it being super efficient and can tell u **** u never thought existed ..it just looked like the bomb to me..love it for golf gym cycling walking running ..my advice dude ..if it's a Fenix u want don't waste ur time with almost watches ..u will never truly be happy and whatever u spend will be a waste..yes u will try justify but in ur heart u know it's the Fenix u want.. Yolo..**** it ..it's only money you would waste on something else in any case..buy the watch u want

So, throwing a guess there:

You are between 16 and 26 years old and you typed this reply on your phone? No condemnation, just an observation from your typing style...

Curretly having the same decision problem, as my Polar V800 glass delaminated and water came in (4 years old)

Want the Fenix 5 Plus.  Can't justify the sapphire glass price and Garmin SA decided not to bring in the normal glass version.

Clever Training and Aramax Global Shopper can get me the Glass version landed before VAT for R9,000, still a lot

Then, I started looking at the Fenix 5 Glass (did come to SA), now going on sale due to age and model. Can get that for R9k all in and bought in SA.  Yes, music, wifi, tap payments and maps are actually not usefull to me, But then I learnt about the connection issues it has with Straps, Power Meters, Foot pods etc.  So you must be lucky and get a model with revised antenna or else.  I do not want to spend 9k new, or 7-8k used on something that might or might not have good connection with components. (You have to look at the FCE number to tell if it's the "newer" one)

So my decision, 735xt on Vitality.  I will end up paying only R2k for it.  Should be able to break even when I sell at the time the Fenix 5 Plus is replaced by the Fenix 6 and becomes cheaper. The 5 Plus was already $100 cheaper than now on Black Friday, so it will come.

(And then the whole problem starts again because of envy for the 6  :whistling: )

Did the same for my other half as she is now getting into multi-discipline training and may want to race some day (Triathlons).  For now we went for the 735XT from Sportsmans (current have a sale on) for R5k of which will get R500 cash back and she will add it as a device booster with Vitality.

I owned a Fenix 3, then a VivoActive 3, then bought the 935XT. The 935XT is the best watch I have ever ever  ever owned. The biggest advantage: Its unbelievable light weight body! It is a dream to wear.

Fenix 3 (and same for Fenix 5): It is a heavy watch and if you ride MTB off road it actually becomes a problem where the watch constantly hit my protruding little bone on my wrist (whatever that bone is called). You do feel the weight when riding off road. It becomes uncomfortable. In fact, it actually hurt so much, I took teh watch off whilst riding. Sure there is a bicycle mount..just did not use it.

VivoActive 3: Not a bad watch but to some degree limited capabilities. At the time was also flooded with software bugs which by now may have been fixed. I actually returned my VivoActive 3. Just wasn't happy. Face also a tad too small

935XT: Smiles all the way! It fulfills my needs in every possible way! Do not even feel it when riding off road. Sure no sapphire screen but just bought a screen protector for it and viola..problem solved. Any scratches = replace screen cover. Battery life is insane and is an absolute pleasure. By far my recommendation

735XT: Bought one for the wife. Also a GREAT watch and received ZERO complaints from the wife. Slightly less capabilities than the 935XT but those features you may just be happy to live without.

Garmin 935 bought 4 august 2017 just stopped reading hr properly... both on wrist and from 2 different hrm. Garmin warranty is 1 year which is pretty feeble on what was a 11k tri bundle watch.

Headed to navworld on friday for what I suspect will be bad news.

So I went ahead with the more cost-effective option in the end.

Got my Garmin Instinct yesterday.

So far I'm very happy.

Still learning the ins-&-outs of the watch.

But I have to say I was a bit reluctant on the casio-style look at first when placing my order, but it looks a lot nicer in person.

In the end, I think the reviews helped me with the decision and this watch seemed to be quite durable - which for me provides great peace of mind.

Thanks to ALL who contributed and helped shape my decision.

Download some faces to liven it up a bit. The black on black is so business.

Unfortunately the Instinct doesn't support Connect IQ.
