It's not the distance, if there are 5x 4m sections that is 5 times I have to stop and wait before I can ride.

I have no problem with people riding SPD, just make sure you can handle it on all terrain. Otherwise join me and the other #noobs with out flats.

If you can't ride 5x 4m sections in a 60km race that's hardly a reason to go flats over SPDs. Unclip and walk those, enjoy the efficiency over the remaining 59.98km.

I'm with Roux on the flats...but that's a topic for another thread (oh wait, deja vu!).

For me, the ability to instantly get off far outweighs the benefits of being clipped in - but saying that, I'm not gunning for podium.  Too many of my friends have scars and bruises from falls purely resulting from not being able to clip out in time - just because they've been taught that real MTB'ers should always ride clipped in...

Anyway, see you on the short one (25km) on Saturday. I'll be riding flats.  :whistling:  Anyone know if that route goes along the concrete section up by the mast?

The 45 and 60 comes down there at the end. So I don't think they will have other routes going up there.

The Cobra seemed more technical than usual to me - got a puncture that wouldn't seal and ran out of bombs so I had an excuse to walk it - both collarbones intact yay.

Thanks to unknown rider for the bomb that got me back on 2 wheels.

I hear that there has been about 6 helivacs out of the cobra over the last month or so. Tomorrow is going to be interesting.

I spent 60km thinking about this post and wondering to myself - "when is this cobra thing that everyone's talking about coming up? I don't want to be airlifted out of here".  I got to the finish and still didn't know what the cobra was!

Absolutely perfect day out there. Followed my standard MO to ensure that I will be funriding and not racing. Way too much red wine last night and got to bed much too late.

I was riding at the back and took it easy, thankfully I was so slow no SPD riders annoyed me, not even the nice lady from Maties that I was behind on The Cobra. She took corners slowly with one foot clipped out. She did say "Jammer" on the 3rd turn and I replied "Geen probleen, die pace werk vir my".

On Fair Cape Milkshake she apparently had a bad fall but still manage to out ride me and some other 60km riders so good for her.

The last climb was is much harder now that we go straight and I managed to ride up until 10 meter after the cement section. Been a while since I pushed my bike but at least I was in comfy tekkies.

That Boomslang added to the descent is pure bliss.

All in all I'm very happy and enjoyed the 4h15 out on the trails today.

^_^ Well played.

At the speed I climb I would have fallen over.

What did they say at the start was the reason we could not go up the old route? I heard them talking about it but was too far back.

Not sure. Didn't do the mtb. But the route goes over a number of farms and landowners can often be fickle about giving access.

I heard them talking about "wild camels" which just couldn't be right.

Proper day out... really enjoyed the route. Tough but well rewarded.

luckily i didn't have too much issues with the route merge. The ST after the mast on way back to finish, both slower riders happily moved out of the way when asked.

like the early start but would of been great if my 2week old kid gave me more than a broken 3hr nap friday evening
