Did you see the amazing story about "that" song I posted on the song thread?

No? But I saw recently there were a few articles about her getting so much hate when she tore up the Pope's photo - one of the most defining moments of my young, impressionable life.

Was about the story behind when prince wrote that song. Gives you a glimpse into the brilliance of the man too. Well worth a listen

Not too many Genesis fans here then.

I think they were and still are) one of the best bands ever until Phil Collins stuffed them up.

Gabriel is in a class of his own.

After a bit more thought:

Paul Simon - Graceland

Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms

Foo Fighters - Echos, Silence, Patience and Grace

Sisters of Mercy - Floodland

Fleetwood Mac - Tango in the Night

Leonard Cohen - I'm Your Man

And then straight out of left field:

Jeff Wayne - War of the Worlds

I'm currently going through this process.

I've recently somehow ended up with a record player - but have no vinyl.  Having collected tapes/LP's/ CD's in the past and having had 100's at various points, it's not something I want to do again.

I've limited myself to a maximum of 20 LP's.  No greatest hits, no compilations, no soundtracks.

I've got 6 albums so far :-)    When I reach 20, and I find myself wanting to get number 21, I have to sell one of the existing.  We'll see how it goes....  (I'm not only going to listen to just these albums - I have streaming services too. )

Two off the six I have aren't listed on the thread so far:

Sting - Soul Cages

Bruce Springsteen - Born in the USA

Also want to add:

Ultravox - Monument (Live)

Someone nicked my vinyl copy from my collection many years ago. Could never find one again until I discovered Discogs. Imported me a nice mint copy from the UK.

And then also

Mike Oldfield - Ommadawn. I discovered that one from a friend that used to listen to it at Technikon after he had a bottle of Tequila with a Dagga zol, which sometimes occured daily.

Ha ha.. Fair enough

I'm not a big fan of greatest hits albums... A good album should be listened to like reading a book and tell a story.. That's lost with compilations

I absolutely agree - in theory. In practice, however, there are too many factors to take into account. For instance, the two Roger Waters albums are an easy choice to include because they tell a story and there are only two of them.

But Queen! Look at Queen's discography:

Queen    Studio albums 15 Live albums 10 Compilation albums 15 EPs 7 Singles 72 Soundtrack albums 2 Box sets 19 Other releases 1

That's just insane. How do you even start to choose without leaving out something? So with Queen I just took the Greatest Hits collection - and that's already 3 CDs, totaling more than 50 songs.

No Jazz heads? Soul? Blues? Swing?

I'm not a jazz fan, but I've got some soul, blues and swing. Mostly soundtracks like O Brother Where Art Thou, Blues Brothers and Swingers. As someone else said, a good soundtrack can be an excellent compilation album to have.

No Jazz heads? Soul? Blues? Swing?

I like to think I've got fairly eclectic tastes...

Jazz - prefer Coltrane and Monk to Miles Davis but A Kind of Blue is still a special listen.

Soul? Can't go pass Otis - recommend Otis Blue to anyone not overly familiar and wanting to experience timeless soul music.

Blues - on an earlier post I listed Robert Cray's Strong Persuader - great album but far smoother than the gravelly voiced, 12 bar blues that characterises much of the genre. If you can get it, look out for an album called Showdown featuring Cray, Albert Collins and Johnny Copeland.

Swing? To me an ill-defined genre; also a pretty encompassing term - Louis Jordan - Cab Calloway - Count Basie, Glenn Miller - Sinatra... For a contemporary take listen to Joe Jackson's Jumpin' Jive - an old favourite that is regularly revisited.
