I see fertility treatment much like other aspects of medicine that have evolved to assist people. Never thought of it as 'playing God' much like saving a life through a triple bypass or whatever isn't 'playing God ' because somebody who would have died without medical intervention didn't.

It's not about whether rational people believe medicine is valuable but whether a fundamentalist will say they know the Lord doesn't want a blastocyst to be aborted even when hundreds of thousands are likely spontaneously the world over every month, and which in themselves can cause heartache and grief, but will in the same breath not accept that the same god doesn't want them to have children, and will use IVF cos it suits them. Too often a god is just a selfish (but entirely human) subversion. It's the sanctity of life thing versus 'yay, death penalty'. It's the love thy neighbour thing versus 'ban the gays'. It's the camel, eye, needle thing versus trying to get an ebike into a cycling race.

Some food for thought...

In a perfect world nobody would get pregnant until they were ready, nobody would have intercourse who wasn't ready to be a mother. In a perfect world every fertilized egg would have a long line of family members waiting to love, care and support it after 9 months... but we unfortunately do not live in anything like a perfect world, and this ladies and gentlemen is reality:

This is a slippery slope.

How do you define playing god?

Me personally don't have a definition on a technicality because there is no god or gods. Everything that has been attributed to any of the deities divine interventions can be explained and proven scientifically. (my considered opinion - not wanting to send this debate down that road, as inevitable as I see it)

The context I was using the term is to show the hypocrisy that comes from saying that pregnancy is "god's will/divine plan" yadda yadda but then being allowed to use science to start one and not end one.

he makes some very good points. I like how he added to the views of the sweet ladies at the end of the video. I'm very sorry that he is "retired".

I was wondering what on earth made you revive this thread...

Finally, some good news.

That is great news. Now little 11 year old Sally, who was raped by her uncle, and only found out at 7 weeks that she is pregnant, will have to go through the trauma of carrying and delivering the baby. But hey, at least that clump of cells with no brain or cerebral cortex lives.

Roe v Wade taken its first real blow. That bastion of conservatism Alabama has passed a bill banning abortion.

Got to love the ultra religious states... Abortion is bad.... unless you're God.. Then you can abort away at will

It is messed up.. beyond stupid.. now all that will happen is backstreet abortions ..a very irresponsible bill voted in by a bunch of men. And then they still made it a federal crime which means a woman/girl who was raped and has an abortion would spend a longer time in jail than he rapist... if the rapist is ever found and prosecuted.

If these bigots don't ensure the safety and wellbeing of these children from birth to adulthood, then they're not pro-life, just pro-birth.

Exactly. More kids will end up in the system.

Maybe the men that voted it in and all who support it should take responsibility for that and raise them all themselves.

So it was only 32 Republican men that voted yes on this bill. I read (not sure how true it is) that of these 32, one tried to have a tampon vending machine at his office building removed, because he thought they were sex toys, and one thought that for internal exams at gynecological visits, women could just swallow little cameras (like the digestive tract is somehow directly connected to the reproductive organs). These are the people that are deciding what women can and cannot do with their own bodies.

Even though the bill was passed, it is not in force yet and reading some of the US analyses, it is unlikely to be until the matter goes back to the US Supreme court.

In signing the bill the Alabama governor acknowledged it saying:" The sponsors of this bill believe that it is time, once again, for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit this important matter, and they believe this act may bring about the best opportunity for this to occur"

So it seems that the decision remains with the Supreme court and one trusts that they will see sense and do the right thing.

Yes, but thanks to Republican blocking and Trump getting to appoint 2 judges, the Supreme court is now majority conservative leaning.
