I  would have thought that the Savages know that part of the world better than anyone else. ;)

Not so much 'routes', but for short sharp interval training and hill repeats in the Southern Suburbs, I use 2 places:

1. The straight-up tar road from UCT to Rhodes Memorial.

2. From Claremont / Kenilworth over the M3 footbridge into Bishops Court to the top of Wynberg hill

Both are quiet, mostly traffic free back roads, nice and steep

  • 9 months later...

I've just moved to the Southern Suburbs (Claremont) and the roads scare me! The roads I've seen are pretty narrow so I am scared to go exploring on my bike because I don't know the back roads too well.

Are there any suggested roads to use (early morning or late evening) which have sufficient distance and are relatively quiet? I really want to just get on my bike and ride at least 20km rather than wait for the group rides on the weekend.

You actually well positioned to go over constantia nek, or go to muizenberg - simonstown, or head out liebeeck Parkway all the way to to town - seapoint.

For MTB you close to Kirstenbosh Trail and Rhodes

Alot of us start our rides in Claremont/Wynberg.

Yes the roads are narrow in areas but my best advice is, start your rides as early as possible.

There are a few really nice routes up constania Nek and back down Into Constania and around Tokai, easily 20-30km. I can send you a strava link to a few.

While I agree with this I have kind of been looking at what I think is the biggest issue. Earlier rides mean quieter roads but also the last drunk drivers gong home. They seem to cause quite a few fatalities? It just seems like most deaths happen between 5am and 6.30am. I could be wrong here but this seems to be my observation!

You make good points.

I suppose it still boils down to a roll of the dice.

I generally feel safe on the roads during the times you are referring to, but then it only needs to take 1 guy/gal.
