Terrible....this country needs to clamp down hard on people leaving the accident scene. There should be a mandatory sentence on this like 5 years at least. But as many have pointed out even when this low life is eventually caught it will be too late and he will get minimal punishment.

Exactly.

How about if you're involved in an accident from 12am-8am on a weekend you are presumed to be drunk. The onus then on the driver to be tested to prove that he is indeed sober(like us always claimed).

What gets my **** up.

Is that as with the loss of my friend Nino Oppel last year the driver ran off to sober up.

Then it becomes a mistake/manslaughter case ,it appears that the youngster that killed Nino is going to get away with it,as will this driver.

It is so so sad and frustrating.

Yet if the remaining cyclists had to **** the driver up they would be spending the easter weekend in jail.

That that family not only spends this easter bit eternity fatherless and husbandless.

It's heartbreaking dying doing something you love.

Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggghhhhh (Frustration )

I try not to vent on these threads out of respect for the victims, but I know how you feel - a feeling of helplessness.

. . .  a culture of Drinking & Driving, an ineffective police force and the resulting "you can get away with it if you run away" is just infuriating.

Sad. Perp must spend many years behind bars for fleeing.

Let’s not assume anything else at this point.

I'm more than willing to assume that the guy was drinking. On the balance of probabilities he does not get benefit of my doubt

Part of wonders if they saw them and wanted to scare the riders and misjudged things in an inebriated state.

In this day and age there is a good chance he could have been busy texting or reading texts on his phone.

Just look around and see how many drivers are doing this.

Or eating serial out of a bowl in her lap while driving to work, like I saw on my morning commute a while back.

Why the **** would you say that?

Are you retarded?

Easy there tiger. Because that road is wide and straight with a large shoulder... And because it's the kind of thing that an asshole does especially if they've had a bit to drink. Yes they could have fallen asleep at the wheel or been texting too.

Also...retarded is not a very nice thing to say

I can chip in here...

Why? Because people do that S&+t when they are drunk.

Had a bit of a "dice" with a guy on my way back home after visiting my then girlfriend, (she is now the wife). Next moment he slams into me on a dead straight section of road, after all the years that has passed since then there is still no other plausible reason other than that he wanted to scare me but miscalculated.

Unfortunately for him he was driving a University of Pretoria branded vehicle and no way he was getting away and staying away. He actually drove off, but came back 5mins later.

He had a buddy in the car who probably convinced him to come reconcile. Needless to say I didn't pay a cent for my repairs.

Point is, people are a+-=oles, especially drunk drivers, and that theory is just as plausible to me as all of the others.

People are assholes and will do stupid **** to get a kick or impress a passenger.

Takes me back some years to two pricks in a bakkie doing it to a friend of mine. Difference is they went around the block after messing with him a bit and took a baseball bat to him from behind.

My thoughts are with the family friends and fellow riders of our lost brother .

May the murderer be caught , bliksemed and thrown in jail for at least 20 years with a flogging every Friday morning to remind him of the everlasting  damage that he created.

According to News 24 , 321 drivers have been caught driving under the influence by Saturday afternoon since the start of the Easter weekend . We can only speculate on the number of intoxicated drivers that have not been caught .

Clearly these drivers are not afraid of the law and law enforcement and I see no hope that this will change soon or at all.

So what do we do as cyclists ?

I see 3 options

1 . stop cycling

2 . stop riding on the roads and stick to mountain biking

3 . start to protect ourselves .

As to 3 above , on Saturday 4 May 2004 my then Club in Pretoria suffered a similar tragedy when a drunk student drove into our bunch shortly after the start of our ride , killing 2 husbands , a father of 2 and injuring many others . Some of which either through physical or mental injuries never cycled again.

We did a big protest ride and one of the lawyers in our club kept pressure on the prosecutor to charge and prosecute the *&%$#@ . His punishment was such an insult to the fallen I can not even remember what it was.

But what we did was to decide to keep on riding , we upped club membership fees and employed people to drive behind our groups to protect our backs during weekend rides . Besides irritating some motorists there have not been any incidents since .

As far as I know the club is still doing it.

Be safe out there , be visible and be alert .

Because unfortunately people do that more regularly these days.

It’s speculation of course, but it’s no more speculative that saying he/she was texting and driving or driving under the influence.
