Yes, I am financing a bicycle. No, I don't need your judgement.

It's not a binary thing.

if financing a bike for your health is what you're talking about, then you're paying eg. R40k over time for a R30k bike.

You don't need a R30k bike to do it for your health.

Where I think this is an issue is you can afford an alu silverback, but the latest carbon spaz is so much more bling and streetcred. if the only way you can get the spaz is by finance, then you're living beyond your means, for a bit of ego.

It is EXACTLY the same with how far too many south africans view cars. We spend an inordinate amount of money on our cars, it is a weird culture. and it looks like the finance guys are trying to spread it to the bike market

Nail on the head. Nothing wrong with financing, but IMO if you are financing a Luxury car when you can afford a more modest one cash, it may not be the smartest thing. Again, people can do what they like, but I will rather drive the bakkie I own than the a Jag I don't. Same goes for bikes.

If you have to finance, do it, but then don't go for the S-Works or Santa Cruz CC model, a workers class bike does the same thing haha

if you buy the bike on sale and save money, then finance this - the saving will make up for extra interest and then it will be like buying cash - just not all up front....

Gym contract has no interest

Gym contract can be cancelled (per CPA, they cannot charge “rest of period” as penalty)

Both not applicable to your finance deal

If they dont want to cancel your contract, you just go have a wank on the floor...

Ended my cell phone contract tongo pay as you go. Samsung j8 phone does everything for 4k on takealot and go pay as you go for the rest. Admittedly im not a heavy user but saving is substantial... about 8k a year including cost of new phone.

Yeah not exactly the same is it?

One is a necessity and the other a luxury. Also not much on the way of options other the existing contracts.

A pair of runnings or trail shoes is probably the better " investment" if health is the justifiction.

I financed a bike through Wesbank years back, yes I paid more In the end but enabled me to get my life back.

I financed mine with Yonda and its been painless.

I usually don't finance toys either and I don't generally recommend it, but after a horrific (literally traumatic - and not the snowflake idea of trauma) year in 2017 getting back onto a bike that I was passionate about also turned my life around and contributed to keeping me alive.

Is it ideal? No. Has it been worth it? Absolutely.

You’re just scratching the surface of the benefits that a Virgin Active membership has to offer.

which would be what ?  :whistling:

For the typical person stuck to typical office hours .... you are effectively tied into the programs offered at night ... which means you join the line fighting for parking ... and once inside it gets no better ....

I have been very fortunate to use a gym during day time for many months.  NICE !!

Never been able to re-adjust to the maddening night time rush ....

IF I had to work IN Cape Town, then it would make perfect sense to drive before traffic, gym for an hour, and still be early for work ....

The actual "programs\equipment" inside a gym is just one part of the story.  These need to be available, and accessible, at a time that works for YOU ...

I stupidly made the mistake of buying a cellphone myself for the first time since 2006 recently. Since then work has always given me a phone. Work still give me a base level iPhone, but I, in a moment of madness, bought a new XR a couple of months ago and stuck my work sim card in.

Every time I use it now, I think how that £800 could have paid for a week of cycling in Majorca instead.

The gym comparison is a bit inaccurate.

Firstly, its likely subsidized by your medical aid, you need factor that in.

Then its also a "small" monthly for the use of many expensive bits of equipment.

A more fair comparison would be to to say you pay R1000 pm for the exclusive use on a Wattbike and Wattbike only.

When you do that, it will in fact (as per Bicycle Finance SA) cost R2767 pm for 3 years, based on a Wattbike costing R60k, and your total repayment would be R99k. But you own the Wattbike afterwards.

R99k is 10 years worth of Wattbike, and all the other equipment, showers, pool use at a Virgin active.

I can't even do 3min on a WB never mind 10yrs
