AndyJames Posted June 11, 2019 Share How long does it take with reasonable weekly effort to get fit enough to complete a 70km a day 3 day Mtb race? I have only been cycling for about 6 months. Any advice would be appreciated.
Gerhard765 Posted June 11, 2019 Share Have a look at link below:https://www.bicycling.co.za/training-1/8-weeks-first-stage-race/ It is a 8 week training program in preparation for the stage race. Training is heart rate based. Helped me with my last sani. Mr. G
FDP Posted June 11, 2019 Share A bit more info would be helpful. You say you have only been cycling for 6 months. How many kms/hours do you currently do per week? Sporting background? - running, etc.
AndyJames Posted June 11, 2019 Share A bit more info would be helpful. You say you have only been cycling for 6 months. How many kms/hours do you currently do per week? Sporting background? - running, etc. I am 47 years old. I currently ride about 7 hours a week. I completed one 45km race recently at an average speed of 17.5km hour with 830m elevation gain. So that's my fitness level at the moment. I played squash for a long time and recently took up cycling to avoid knee problems. I have been roped into committing to the 3 towers race in September but was wondering if that is going to be too much to get ready for in only 3 months? mrcg Posted June 11, 2019 Share As a reasonably fit guy (I'm assuming), you should be fine. Nothing should be too much in respect of finishing. That is really the crux: what are your expectations? R8de within yourself, make sure your technical level is decent and learn. Stage racing is no massive biggie if you take it easy. Racing is a different story. Towers is quite technical in parts, so perhaps a skills clinic from a reputed coach or experienced rider, possibly with some tips for training would be in order. Good luck and enjoy your journey! cat-i

OneLove Posted June 11, 2019 Share I completed one 45km race recently at an average speed of 17.5km hour with 830m elevation gain. This is fast assuming there must of been technical bits... If you can do this you should be ok.
Skubarra Posted June 11, 2019 Share Long weekend coming up. Ride 50km each day and see how you feel.Adjust training accordingly That really is all that there is to it - if you want to know if you would be able to complete a race go do a training ride(s) of a similar distance on roughly similar terrain. Nothing mysterious or special about a stage race, it is just riding your bike on consecutive days.
eddy Posted June 11, 2019 Share Thanks, So it looks like at least 11 hours a week to be prepared? No, I think that you could do it with much less than 11 hours if you want to ride and enjoy it. You can do a lot with one 4 hour and three 1 hour rides a week. Mamil

RocknRolla Posted June 11, 2019 Share 3 Towers offers a lot of climbing. So make sure you get some hill repeats in as part of your training. It's an awesome ride, great intro to stage racing. I rate the route better than sani or berg 'n bush, but I am a bit more biased towards the more technical stuff.
