Do you have a source for that? As I understand if there is no bicycle lane on the road, the lane is yours and cars should pass only when safe. This obviously excludes freeways and other roads where bicycles are prohibited.

Now this will piss a lot of people off riding in the middle of the road, so I rather just keep left so cars can pass safely without going into oncoming traffic.

Yes. It's actually in the National Road Traffic Act. Towards the back somewhere. I checked a few months back. Cyclists may not ride abreast but only in single file, keeping to the left.

And there is the distinction between national and Western Cape laws. In the Western Cape is says :"to the left of the left edge of the roadway" But for national it only says "The law says you must ride on the left of the road" as you have pointed out. This is different and the latter does not specifically say keep to the edge of the lane, just on the left. This can is not as clear and can mean on the left side. So as long as you are not riding into oncoming traffic (which I do not understand why some people do this, terrifying) , you are on the left of the road.

PS. to fix the !!! problem, paste in word and use CTRL-H to replace all ! with a space. That pdf did the same thing with me,

Every day I drive I see motorist doing DANGEROUDS stupid ****

Cell phones, Kids not in belts etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

Sunday morning I was waiting for friends at a traffic light.

Saw 7 cars skip red, or stop halfway into the road and not one of teh 15 cyclist that came past did that.

So what? My point was in relation to a specific comment. Themuns, theotheruns and usuns is irrelevant. Every ******* driver in the world driving like a **** does not change the fact that sometimes cyclists cause danger to car drivers, no matter how carefully they drive.

To the left is still the left. Be that as it may, I will always try and ride as far left as possible even if its to the left of the yellow lane. As the law states, the road must be shared among its users. So why not make it easy on everyone instead of being difficult about it.

Actually cyclist are not entitled to their own lane and should stay as far left as possible in single file, according to the laws of our roads.

This is what motorists do not understand....those words are not a  distance and on some roads that can mean 1m away from the left as there might be crap on the road.

Can anyone who witnessed a rider having road rage against a woman driving on William Nicol this morning come forward with details of the rider. He did some serious damage to the car at the robot after loosing his temper. I think the rider was part of a cyclelab ride as the driver of the vehicle said there was a vehicle following the riders. This kind of behavior is a disgrace. Please guys can one of the other riders come forward and do the right thing. Thankyou.

I cycle most Sundays around the Cradle area park at Bidons and ride the roads around Cradle..

This Saturday however I had to fetch the wife from Lanseria airport on an early Durban flight.

Knowing that there is roadworks on Malibongwe I went down Beyers past the turn off to Cradle and Bidons and right on the R552 towards Elandsdrift.

This section of road has a demarcated cycling lane on the left, marked with a yellow line.

Lots of cyclists on road most riding responsibly.

However I came upon a Cycle Lab group.

The sense of entitlement was there to see. 5 abreast in places, way over the demarcated lane.

I'm a cyclist so I gave way and luckily at that time traffic coming towards me was light so the opposite side of the road was clear and this allowed me to skirt around the group.

However I can clearly see how with a driver who is a none cyclist this could have escalated into an issue.

Ask me given a fracas that could develop between a car driver and a part of the group who I would support.

A road user who is having to contend with cyclists who don't give a damn, or the arrogant entitled group riding from Cycle lab.

No brainer.

Like DiD said, cyclist riding like chop will only kill HIMSELF (not that i approve of riding like a chop) but a motorist kills other people!

I didn’t see the incident if I could find out how to upload photos I can show you the damage to the vehicle from kicking and bashing the side of the car - no excuse to behave like an animal. If you can’t behave yourself on the road then get a mountainbike - personally I would have maced they guy in the face and then laid a charge of assault with the police.

yeah its just people like you that we have to put up with on the roads as well, I am sure you are the same type of driver that was involved. you sound like a real beaut. you don't even have the facts or the details and all you do is go on about the cyclists behaviour. come mace me in the face and see how far you get getting to the police station.

I agree, I also ride as far left as possible as I know how irritating it is getting stuck behind someone slower with my car. And even though as I understand the law I can use the lane, the laws of physics trump the laws of our country. I will rather keep left and avoid being hit by the big piece of metal that will not care that I am right,

9 pages of bitching about cyclists and drivers

I suggest we agree on a time and place, round up all the two and four wheeled bastards in sight and engage in a spot of public caning

in most cases the motorist expects you stop get of your bicycle and let them past while you walk in the trash you low life bicycle rider you....

Biggest problem for cyclists is cyclists who are motoring apologists.. SA drivers need to be properly educated. The change won't come from that community. It needs to come from cyclists who drive as if they are cyclists, not motorists who cycle like they are motorists

Chapeau, this is the correct behaviour. Keep calm and pass when safe to do so. Beyond that no other emotion is necessary as the cyclists are now in the rear view mirror and no one was endangered.

I cannot understand why motorist have to get anger the moment they have to reduce speed or stop. The impatient behaviour demonstrated by so many drivers has to stop if the roads are to be safer for cyclists. It starts with us cyclists when we take the steering wheel. Drive like you want drivers to behave when you're on your bicycle.

• The!law!says!you!must!ride!on!the!left!of!the!road.

Yip, That is the rule of the road in South Africa and applies to all road users, not just cyclists. We drive on the left, not the right.

It does not mean that we must drive so far to the left that we pose a risk to ourselves. Where there is no safe space for a cyclist AND a car to the left of the centre line, that the cyclist must endanger himself.
