Hubbers please tell me if I see this the wrong way.

We ( there is a group of us) have done a few stage races to raise money for charities / non profits.

For example, Epic, W2W, the 480km FAW ride etc.

Not once have we taken money from any donations and applied it toward clothing or entry fees etc.

Now this has came to my attention:

A person get 50% of his Epic entry sponsored. This was posted on his FB in July. At the same time he starts asking for private donations for the other 50%.

Then he sets up a GivenGain account  (In DECEMBER) and states in the description on GivenGain that only 50% of donations is going to the charity. Said charity has no agreement in place for this, and I know they will NEVER enter into an agreement like that. GivenGain terms and conditions states that all money donated goes directly to the charity.

Now he is slandering the organization on FB etc. After he apparently demanded his 50% to be refunded.

I don't think he ever WANTED to raise money for the charity, but rather only to use them to get money towards his leisure Epic ride.

Not sure i understand

who requests a refund from a charity...I've ridden for a few charities before and not once asked for any portion back which was raised.

unless he only raised R5000 and when doing a EFT to the charity he added a extra zero at the end lol which I doubt in this case.

No he raised about 11K and now wants 50% of that.

Edit: Looking at his FB timeline etc. He only wanted to use the charity to get money to fund his race.

So he would be a paid fundraiser for the charity. Putting on my hat as a self professed hub lawyer (by declaring that I am not a lawyer), I would say this would be above board if he had an employment contract with the charity.

Exactly, he was not asked by them to raise funds.

He just put it on GivenGain but never discussed it with the Charity.

Should I name and shame?

Edit: Maybe I am just sensitive because as group of friends we have raised more than 150k for this and other charities.

Not once did we / I take a sent from the money donated, as feel it should ALL go to the non profit.

Now this self entitled person comes along and "demands" and when he does not get his way he slanders the organization on social media.

Dont think you need to go as far as 'name & shame' only because I think the charity org wont entertain his claims for refund.

Thats just my view...

Maybe put it to a vote.

More than 10 yes' is a go for name & shame.

But I vote No.

I will not give to an individual raising funds for a charity that does not go through a 'GivenGain' type organisation or is given directly to the charity. I am aware that these organisations do take a percentage, but at least the charity gets the bulk and individuals can't help themselves to the cash. Individuals, in my experience, tend to 'deduct their costs' before the charity gets anything. Sad

That is also where we need to do a bit of our due diligence of what percentage goes to the NGO. When I worked for an NGO we refused those sms donate facility because 50% went to cellphone company and the service provider. So we refused that arrangement. There is no fix rule in the NGO sector of what is an allowable percentage that can go towards the cost of raising those funds. Sometimes 10% is thrown around. It depends on the amount, ethics. But most important, there needs to be 100% transparency upfront. NGOs are not there to fulfill someone's bucket list. The maths must add up

No I wouldn't name and shame him - leave it to the charity to deal with him

This oke is confused in the head: Not sure how donating towards a private event is a donation? He says in the request its expensive and is raising money for his entry fee.

Good day! I’m taking part in 2020 Absa Cape Epic and need your help to raise money for Operation Smile South Africa, who help children born with cleft palates get safe surgery, giving them a beautiful smile that will change their lives forever. In addition, due to the Cape Epic being extremely expensive, i am also raising money to take part in this prestigious event. All donations are split 50/50 between charity and event. If you can, please donate to my fundraising project on GivenGain!
