So Im going to be starting road cycling in the next 2 weeks or so and I already have a helmet, jersey, tights and funny socks to wear. My question is: what shoes should i start riding with? Is it imperative that i learn to use cleats and stick to them or is it acceptable to wear sneakers for example. Im very low on budget but would like to be as 'correct' as possible ???? any advice?

Why be “correct”, ride your hike, enjoy it and forget what everyone else thinks.

I will definitely enjoy it but i kinda want to get the cool stuff as well and look the part one day lol.

Nothing wrong with one day, but you yourself said the budget it tight and there is zero rush to look the part. Quite frankly there is too much “part” to be looking at already. Lol

If your not already used to cleats, rather stick with the sneakers until your comfortable - there is a lot to get comfortable with when riding on the road i.e cars, traffic lights, group riding, pedestrians, rim brakes(?), wet roads. These can require sudden stopping and its generally safer to not also have to remember to uncleat - plus you can easily walk in sneakers  :D

I did the 200km DC with someone who rode in sneakers, no issues. I'd say give it a month or two, then look at some cleats once you've settled. Personally I love the road - speed, group riding, lots of fun  :D. Good luck with your new adventure!

So so true. There's the retro look, the gravel look, the mtb, the triathlete look, the wannabee Pro look, the club look, the short sock look, the long sock look, the German tourist look, the I dunno what my favourite colour is so threw em all together look, the Specialized look, the I bought South wheels and got this fugly shirt for free look, etc etc etc....

May as well keep the tekkies for now and keep the I started after 10am CTCT look

Better to not look the part and be able to ride well, than to look the part and not be able to ride well

 ......

are you stark raving mad//!!!??

Always better to look good while not riding well.

There's nothing wrong with wanting to look the part as you say. You will find plenty of advice that says you shouldn't, and there's no need, but if it's what you want to do, then do it. Like the guy said, ride your bike and enjoy it, and if part of that for you means dressing to what you feel you want to, then do it.

To your question, I got my fiancee a pair of Crono shoes with a nice carbon sole off takealot for R600 on special, so look around, there's lots of specials.

On a budget, check out the classifieds right here. I've bought used shoes here before.

Sorry nobody is being helpful here. :(

If you want to look the part, then there are these baller pair of Fizik R5 Powerstrap, you can go black or white, I have got a set of both. They are currently on special and wont find better value for money.

You will also need a set or road pedals, the PD-RS500 is a greater beginner cleat with easy clip in and out.

Welcome and enjoy looking the part!!

Pfffttttt!!!

You can't look the part with a "Nylon composite outsole". You need carbon.
