Thanks for all the replies! Somehow missed that the Trek is not a 29er. Feels like I am being pulled in different directions... And I cannot make up my mind. I thought you get hardtail and softail, nervermind XC and trail ????

 

I guess I'll be doing XC? Mostly tar and gravel and flowy singletrack. Nothing too hectic or technical.

 

I am leaning towards the Specialised epic comp 2019 in the classifieds. Will do some research ????

Definitely get the bike with the best components. Screw the brand. At this level they all have decent frames, and the frames are all pretty much made in Taiwan or China.

 

Suspension should be the first to check with regards to components.

fully aligned. It does pedal very well and very comfy too. Its also under 11kg whereas every other option at this price oint is over 13 to 14 kg.

A woman on a small I reckon i weighing in around 45-55kg range. That extra 4 kg of bike mass plus the huge wheels, higher stand over, wiiiiiiiiide bars and longer top tubes will make for a compromised ride

Trek is perfect for you, Merida also but Trek will be lighter and looks in perfect if they drop the price to 35 even better!

Even save R7k on the R35k. Tar, gravel and flowy single track is this beasts bread and butter.

Ag no man Savage, a gravel bike should only be considered once you have at least 2 other bikes already!

From your requirements and budget described, would say the Trek is the option out of the three. Comfortable and responsive bike, bargain at 35k with a carbon frame. 

Possibly also have a look at the Titan Cypher or Silverback in that range.

Yes the Trek is a 27.5 but don't let that scare you away. I'm not sure what your height is but if a small is your size I'd say consider a 27.5. 

At your beduget point 29ers are heavy, like Down Hill bike heavy ( I had a Gemini years ago that had a 180mm Totem fork, coil shock and 17omm rear travel and it weighed 15kg.

most of the sub R40K 29ers are around 14-15kg with only 100mm travel.

The 27.5 is easier to steer, lighter, easier to learn to manual, wheelie, bunny hop and easier to carry when you have to portage.

My wife has a Liv Lust Advance 2, 27.5 wheel size and she is very happy. Not interested in new bikes or my 29er for me to upgrade.

Have 2 friends on Trek 9.8 top fuel and 9.8 fuel ex and to be honest its what I should have bought instead of the Scott Spark. Trek has a great pedal platform very little pedal bob and at the same time great on small bumps and can take the big hits.

Yup I would also go for the Trek, its a much higher end bike than the others.

Have to agree. 27.5 is no reason to overlook the Trek if it is the correct size, matches your requirements and is within budget
