If you Overheat the Chain it Damages the Coating.

Buddy of mine Overcooked his brand new Chain and It went All Blue and Brittle.

Had to Buy a New Chain.

Stick to Squirt and Ride Into the Sunset.

Did he try and clean it with a blow torch!!???

For the metal to go blue it had to be heated well over 300 degrees

Electric Stove + Frying Pan + Wax Candles + KMC X11 Chain (That's what he Told Me)

No Blow Torches in the Mix

Temperature Unknown.

Sounds like a lot of heat then, hence the metal discolouration

Enough  heat to cause a fire too.

the perfect kind of person for room temperature lube and not hot waxing

He must have run some serious temp to change the metal temper.

The kind of person that always uses max temp when doing everything from making pancakes to frying an egg.

I only posted it because it can happen to somebody else.

Usually that is what people have at home, a Stove and an old frying pan.

Anyway It was the first and Last Time he will do It.

Do any Of you Brilliant Fellows Know how to Emulsify Wax ? (DIY Method)

You will need an emulsion additive to keep the wax in the water. Sodium dodecyl sulphate is such a chemical but it’s  not an over the counter chemical. Smallest pack size is usually 20kg.

sorry forgot to add that a pressure cooker might be a good idea too.

I think the bottom of a pot can get pretty hot while the water isn't even boiling yet, although I'm not sure how hot.

Edit - according to Google:

"The gas flame from using natural gas is about 3542°F (1950°C). The average induction system reaches a temperature of 662°F (350°C). Electric stovetops get very hot. When a small coil on an electric stove is on the highest setting, it can get as hot as 932°F to 1112°F (500°C to 600°C)"

So, if the chain is lying directly on the bottom, it could become pretty hot? But maybe not. It reminds me of a trick where you can boil water in a paper cup with a flame directly under it because the combustion temp of the paper is lower than the boiling point of the water that is absorbing the heat.

You can put a smaller pot or bowl inside / on top that only touches the water / steam. Same method as melting chocolate without burning it. And be careful with the hot steam.

btw, the wax melting mix must give off a lot of flammable fumes?

I was doing it in a glass container in a pot full of boiling water. Now my wife bought me a wax heater on takealot she didn’t want me messing in the kitchen 😜😜 (they start at R169 on takealot)

it’s actually a lot better now i’v got nothing to clean afterwards.

Those are in the cosmetics dept right, the type used for heating wax for hair removal?

I beat the wax in a glass beaker that’s placed in a water filled pot. Even then it’s in slow heat as you don’t want the wax overheating either you just want it he temp just above melting point so around 60 degrees is fine and below boiling point of the water.  This is the way.

if melting in a pot directly use a strainer to suspend the chain so it does not touch the bottom. Again low heat as high heat can oxidise the wax and cause damage to chains as we’ve heard

Look, all you need to know is how to use a double boiler ... 100deg max. temp in the wax pot, no matter how hot you are zapping the hot plate.

If you want the benefits of a wax lubricant and a dry lube in one, this is the product to use:

https://www.maxinc.co.za/products/wurth-hhs-dry-lube-chain-spray-400ml

I have used every other lubricant mentioned on this thread and not one of them comes close to this.

Bought a can today from the local Wurth shop - R190 for 400ml which should last a while. Keen to give it a try, will report back after a couple of rides.

How often do you clean and apply it? Do you just spray it on directly? I was thinking of squirting it into a syringe or squeeze bottle with a nozzle and then use that to drip it onto the chain.
