The last 7 Houwhoek tours I have done, there has never been a need for a CSA License.

This year you need a temporary license to ride the event? What value does CSA add to the event as its not considered a race but a ride ?

very curious about this.

Dont panic, all event organisers are saying this, but there is never anyone from CSA at number collection to do the admin.

1. Monte Casino Classic, CSA were there and only worried about licensed riders.

2. Maluti Ultra this last weekend, no CSA to be seen.....

To organize an event, the organiser is obliged to adhere to the SA Sports, Recreation and Events Act (SASREA). This is any time some sort of mass gathering, use of public roads, public liability among other requirements are needed. The national sports body must sanction it; which is what the value of CSA is being questioned.

There are minimum requirements, and some organisers cut corners, yet still have their race “signed off”.

Participants are mostly unaware, and possibly also might not care. Being the diligent law abiding citizens we are in SA, I don’t see any problems with compliance (some sarcasm).

Great for the cyclists up north but unfortunately for us here in the south the CSA officials are far more motivated to collect their taxes, I have even seen them pitch even at church basaar type rides to collect day fees.

OP should just be thankful that he got away 7 times without paying his day license

It was never required in the past .. this is the first year that it has been needed for the event.

So my understanding is that any organized ride needs a license ?

Ok ..got a response from the organizer

"

"I feel your frustration. Unfortunately, it is no longer possible to affiliate an event with PPA and all events now must affiliate with CSA to obtain the necessary police and municipal approvals and to comply to the Covid emergency regulations. If you do more events per year, it is better to become a CSA member @ R250 per year. Hopefully we will one day put Covid behind us, but I think CSA affiliation is here to stay."

There is a move afoot to force cyclists to join clubs if you wan to participate in CSA sanctioned events.

the latest is CSA wants to do away with the day licenses leaving you the choice of participating in events or not

What would the benefit to CSA be by doing this?

I really hope you have that one wrong, would kill off events.

Have heard on the hub  about needing to be a club member to take out annual CSA membership though.

As far as I'm aware General membership no, racing UCI license yes.

Based on a previous thread even for general membership you now need to be a club member (also something I think is stupid but at least slightly better than forcing everyone who wants to compete at an event to be a club member)

Membership too requires belonging to a club, as of this year. It was approved in their recent AGM.

Ah okay i wasn't aware of the update. I currently have an active membership without being affiliated with a club.

It expires later this year which I'll then have to join a club it seems 😒

nope you now need to be a club member to renew your CSA membership, nothing to do with your license. This was communicated on their website

https://www.cyclingsa.com/cyclingsa-membership-notice/

So if you're not a member of an affiliated club you will be forced to buy a day license. Then if the CSA gets their way to do away with the day license you will have to join a club if you want to participate in any CSA sanctioned event..

This was tried in the past and PPA then flourished. I sounds to me like history repeating itself and once again the governing body not addressing the fundamental issues.

Its much easier to force compliance than build a better product and make compliance to CSA attractive
