So it's nowhere near a standard Tagati thatĀ can handle a wide range of tyres which was one of the requirements as they did not know all road conditions?

This fact checking exercise is a good example of why one shouldn't believe what one reads on the internet, no matter how convincing the poster seems!

For sure and I figured that getting the bike deers from the rider would be conclusive šŸ¤£

From what I understand from Sling's social media recently, they did release a new frameset that accommodates 29r MTB tyres.

the standard Tagati accommodates road wheels to 29x24 wheels and tyres.Ā

the bike Splat refers to is a prototype for a new all road bike that can accept up to 32mm tyres.

It may well also be called Tagati but I was blissfully unaware of its existence even after tegan mentioned and described theĀ  bike as a Tagati and it takes the wider tyres. Me assumes std Tagati = wrong

LOL well that's Tegan " no its just a tagati or something, its a looooovely bike"Ā

thanks for checking up with Sling. Initially she wanted a bike up a wide variety of tyre options and when she said "its a Tagati" I figured that it was the standard bike

If she's been sponsored the bike by Sling she might want to at least add it as her Strava gear & give them the necessary exposure.

it is on her website though but I'm not sure of the exact nature of the acquisition deal.

Prior to the relaunch of the Tagati/Website, they've always had an all road model, the Moya (alongside the Thaba and Tandem). A mate has one, with 32/33mm tyres. In mid October they even announced that Tegan Phillips would be riding the Moya, that changed towards the end of October where they announced it would be a Tagati. The attached pic shows "Tagati" etched on the top tube, as does the one on this thread.Ā
Would venture that this is possibly a Moya which has had Tagati etched on the frame.Ā  I am keen to see what happens with the 3D printed ti fork they've been working on.Ā

Bike nerding aside, it's a super cool adventure to follow and live vicariously through.

quick update, she's suffered a bit of heat stroke so spent the night in El Gouhna Hospital

What was her mileage yesterday ?
And is she riding again today ?

That tracking website shows strange mileage and not sure how/when it updates.
i.e. not very reliable (if you are looking for accurate and up to the minute info)

cool map!

sort of unrelated, I'm not sure if Guiness have set an official start/finish point for cairo<=>cape town, or even some waypoints along the route?

here is Mark Beaumont's route, finishes at Mouille point lighthouse.

Quite often people "finish" at Blouberg as it's a nicer endpoint than dealing with CBD traffic and crap. they then ride the next day to cape point just to "finish" the continent (cape point is the most southwestern point, if not as far south as aghulhas).

Seems like to be a purist the route should start from alexandria or similiar

I hear what you're saying, but if you're riding from Cairo to Cape town it's fine to start in Cairo.

I'm sure you saw this. doesn;t seem to clear it up

The durable and lightweight Tagati bike frame is ideal for long-distance tours. The word ā€˜Tagatiā€™ is derived from the isiZulu word ā€œumthakathiā€, meaningĀ  ā€˜mixer of medicinesā€™. It highlights the magic behind a bike frame with a mix of riding capabilities.Ā

ā€œThis trip demands a bike that is indestructible, comfortable and fast, and my Titanium Tagati is all of those things. Itā€™s got clearance for 32mm tires and Iā€™d be comfortable taking it onto gravel if needed. The Sling Company, based in Johannesburg, are originally aircraft makers, so they know how to weld things to be safe and strong. The frame has minimal proprietary elements which is helpful as adventure bike parts are relatively easy to replace.ā€

Sheā€™s still in the hospital as her electrolyte levels have not stabilised yet. Theyā€™re transferring her to another hospital this morning. Will update when I know more

It just goes to show how carefully you need to monitor/manage an attempt like this. The warning signs must have be there but maybe she was just too keen to get in the big miles early in the ride and pushed herself too hard too soon?

Hoping she makes a full recovery and can get going again šŸ¤™

Totally. just as a purist if you're crossing a continent/island you kind of need to start and finish next to the sea. Kind a like the chris bertish claiming to "cross the pacific" but he finishes in hawaii. which is not even halfway.

but hey, here is me on my office chair hijacking a perfectly good thread about adventure stuff. over and out!
