Interesting reading:

https://lanternerouge.com/2023/07/05/jonas-vingegaard-skyrockets-on-marie-blanque-tour-de-france-2023-stage-5/

That was an all-time great climb from Vingegaard (estimated at 6.92W/kg for ~21m). Pogacar beat his previous bests on that climb significantly, which to me indicates more that Vingegaard is on a completely different climbing level right now to everyone else, rather than Pogacar being off his best.

Disclaimer: Very hard to compare GC climbs between different days/years, as there are so many variables, but interesting to look at nonetheless

I am glad that you worded it like that and weren't alluding to extra-terrestrial performances...

I really enjoyed that. I've underlined the bits that the author wrote with a slightly raised eyebrow:

There’s been so much vert in the first 5 stages @lechatnoir unlike any Tour de France that I can remember and the gradients will always be the battleground for GC - > 3,500 meters in Basque Country on stage 1 or something.

Today’s stage promises be dynamic dynamite - 144.9 kms with 3,800m ascent. Pogačar and Team to strike back and get his race back under control? Bora to control as far as possible and stay in yellow, likely so. Watch Jonas stick like super glue to Tadej’s wheel and watch Jai stick to Jonas’s wheel.

And while they watch each other, I hope Powless go for pink again and maybe a stage win. It’ll be a day for the escape artists.

Hindley is the first Bora rider in the maillot jaune since Sagan in 2018. He is more of a diesel engine and not as punchy as the Dane or the Slovenian. And, as is legend, the Golden Fleece adds a magical 25 watts to the wearer’s pedal force.

Hard racing; beautiful racing. Only week 1, nê.

Think Powless is trying to get out of pink actually!

One day when I am groot I want to do a camper van TdF. Col du Tourmalet looks so awesome with all the vans. Anybody done it before?

It is a hard, unrelenting climb. Best to train for it if you want to go up it. The Strava KOM is like 80 mins or something.

Pacing is key. Nutrition too. The beautiful Pyrenees. Ah, must go back.

And, boom! The race explodes.

Well looks like Vinge going for more time again. And Pogacar teammates all missing again.

Today looks like it could be pivotal.

Amazing race.

Pogi really impressing me again with his maturity. Yesterday, he just continued to tempo instead of trying to jump everytime. And today he waited for Jonas to take the initiative and then pounced. In previous years, he thought he could just do what he wanted but he’s clearly learnt from this which bodes well for the race.
