Special mention to Egan Bernal, previous winner, who completed the Tour de France after a horrendous crash into the back of a bus while flying downhill on a TT bike.

36th place, 2 and half hours behind the yellow, something he wore in 2019.

Seems a lifetime away.

What does Bernal take away from this? Is he going to get back to is best, is that even good enough anymore? Probably being extremely unfair, but the top 15 from that year is full of riders who showed so much GC hope but that's about it.

From someone who as close to being paralysed for life and even possible death with a 3cm leg length desrepancy he takes away so much from this TDF.

Thomas GT winner
Valverde GT winner
Aru GT winner
Quintana GT winner
Bardet podium GT
Porte podium GT
Landa podium GT
Uran podium GT

I wish this was the type of hope I would be able to deliver.

@J Wakefield, whilst you're still around, I was wondering about something on my ride yesterday.

What is the average zone a rider sits in during a TDF ?

Obviously there are many factors at play, like what kind of stage it is, what the riders role on the team is etc. But if you can give a ball park.

The other thing I was wondering.

When there is a shot close enough that you can see the riders glasses clearly, they are never dirty of full of sweat, but I'll take a zone 2 ride and the sweat will obscure my vision. Granted I'm wearing cheap glasses, but are their coated with something ?

as you mentioned there many factors at play here but overall they sitting zone 1/2 if they just riding. but within that stage for example if you on the front pulling you Z3 typcially sitting deep in the bunch as a protected GC rider, Z1/2. A queen stage is another story.

thanks for that John. i would have thought that outfront pulling the bunch you'd be in z4 , but z3 shows just how fit and strong these guys are to be pulling the bunch at those speeds
