I want to buy a certain mtb bike, but it comes with aluminum wheels. I'm wondering  what carbon wheels I could buy with 6k?

Are you looking for rims or wheels? The thread title says rims, but the first post says you are wondering about wheels.

Also your best bet is to buy 2nd hand wheels, but to get decent ones will be very hard at that price. You could probably get 2nd hand rims that are somewhat decent for that price.

Personally, I would not buy 2nd hand carbon wheels or rims unless they came with a warranty. Sometimes cracks are invisible if you aren't looking for them, and it ends in tears when a rim breaks. With aluminium, it is not as much of a problem because the rims are many times cheaper to replace.

Also you need to give much more detail... is it 29, 27.5 or 26? is it for xc or DH? Is it boost or non-boost? All of these will greatly affect price and availability.

For that price I would just get a nice aluminium set with DT Swiss or equal hubs, and forget about whether I can brag to my friends about the rims being tupperware or not :)

🤣🤣 No, it's not about that. I do a lot of xc and the bike must be incredibly light.

Thanks for the advice. I do a lot of xc. I'm looking for a complete wheelset. 29'

Nothing. Plus one for darkhorse

@Adam2007, a left-field idea here:

Have a look at which Carbon wheelset you REALLY want, instead of what you can settle for at R6000.

Now, take your R6000, draw up a business plan to get that amount up to the amount you need for your ideal wheels.

-Buy snacks at the Big retailers, sell them during breaks at school
-Cut the lawn for neighbors in the afternoons, clean their pools
-Get a waitering job at a local restaurant over weekends/School Holidays
-Buy bicycle parts on Facebook marketplace, clean them up, come resell them here

Do whatever tickles your fancy to get there.

1. You'll get an awesome set of wheels
2. You'll get fantastic life experience, this can also be added to a CV once you leave school/varsity. Future employers will value your work ethic. OR, the entrepreneur bug will bite and you will never work for a boss in your life.

Use-it, don't us it.

Enjoy the XC!

You can get a 1600 gram set of wheels for around that price used, in aluminium. I don't think you'll be able to hit your price in carbon.

I would not trust a R6k set of carbon wheels. I would look at Lyne pulse 28 they are around 1600g. That's not far off from their carbon wheels weight if I remember correctly.

To get really light carbon wheels is going to be pricey because it's the spokes, nippels and hubs that brings the weight down and the price up.

Buying old carbon wheels (which is all you might find in your budget) they are going to be narrow well used.

It is a myth that all alloy wheels are heavier than carbon wheels. I would rather go for good alloy wheels than a cheap/budget carbon set.

My 2 cents' worth.
