Jeukendorf mixture is all I have used on long rides for many years.  Cheap and effective for me.

Could you elaborate on what that is?

Damascus nougat bars you buy at spar

I have done a fair bit of AdventureRacing, which requires a bit of continual fueling for long slow keep on going stuff.

My faves that i have settled on is

*Damascus nougat

*Enerjellies

*Biltong, preferably moist and sliced -stringy stuff getting in your teeth is a pain in the butt.

*landjager

and a cold coke/sterri stumpi whenever available are heaven sent

Adjacently, anyone know where to get cheap (but quality) maltodextrin suitable for a DIY dual carb mix?

Like I've said, usually use plain sugar + water on short rides but pretty confident my stomach wouldn't handle multi-hour rides/races with 120g/hr of sugar water and looking for a cheap maltodextrin supply to make a mix : )

Do a search for bakery supply companies. It’s used a filler material in a number industries, but I would trust food manufacturing before but from cosmetic manufacturers.

Maltodextrin is extracted from varying starchy sources, eg. corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, etc.

Quality is a bit vague, as it could imply a non-GMO source, cross contamination, old batch, etc.

edit: My knowledge of this is in the manufacturing of Tic-Tac; when I worked for the company that manufactured this product, along with some other sweet stuff.

I get from a home brew site https://yeahbrew.co.za/product/maltodextrin-de20-1kg/

Jeukendrup's hydration recipe:
½ cup maltodextrin
6 ½ tsp fructose
¼-½ tsp table salt

I have used this for years and it has never failed me.  Plain water until about midday and then only this drink mixed as above until you stop riding.  All products available locally and works out as cheap as chips.
It works for me.

Just some questions from a curious point of view..

How hard do you ride on average?

MTB/Gravel/Road?

Use it for any other disciplines?

To expand on your post, in many of his blog posts, he recommends a ratio of 2:1 (glucose:fructose). 1cup = 24tsp, so a 1/2 cup = 12tsp (maltodextrin) and 6 tsp (of fructose). The extra 1/2 tsp is negligible, can comes down to palatability (including sweetness)

I saw a post on mixing it with fluid, i.e. 1.5L and 1.8L, which then said how many grams of carbs per quantity of liquid. I bookmarked it, but I'm struggling to find it. Will update this post once I find it. The basic point was that we need fluids to help with the absorption of carbs, which is why a gel (being more concentrated) needs to be washed down with fluids. Sodium (salt) plays it's role as it helps to regulate the flow of water to/from the gut. That's the whole osmolarity/osmolality part of the balanced drink. Google homeostasis and you'll see what it says about maintaining the balance.

The old saying of hydration in bottles and fuel in the back pockets; but we are all different, and respond slightly differently.
