We complain about pricing but we still buy them anyway. That’s the problem right now with cycling. Brands charge what they want because they know we’ll end up buying them regardless.

its  not just cycling though, happens in all fields

Have to appreciate the brainwashed following of discerning sheep who "Must have" this in their closet. You're nothing without it.

Pretty sure it may be a nice product.  But at R3k for a jacket .....

Thankfully other local producers that offer very good products at a 1/3rd of the cost.

I beg to differ.

A high-end, proper winter jacket is a game changer. R1.2k? That only buys a good long-sleeve normal jersey these days, R2k gets you a good quality flexible windshell, but without warmth. I've had many of those, but when I got a basically new demo Spez Element 3.0 at half-price (retails for around R6k) a few years ago, I realised what I was missing.

The combination of wicking, wind resistance and skin feel of a premium jacket is hard to beat.

I'm greek, I borrow the sheep sheers from the local farmer 🤣

The RacePace thermal cycling jackets are perfect for cycling past the snow on Swartberg pass - tested myself.  Friends have used the same at some of those freezing Trans Baviaans races.

The only negative ... it is bulky when the heats up.

A back.to.back test of the various brands may well point out finer advantages and disadvantages of the various brands.  Bang for buck ... RacePace certainly offers excellent value.

OK, I see now what your point of reference is.

This level of kit is fine on a tight budget, but it’s not the same thing. It’s like saying a Fox 36 Factory is a rip-off because a Rhythm-level fork does the same thing. They look they same, but that’s where the differences end…

Exactly. There's a difference between buying a high end piece of clothing cos it looks cool at the coffee stop on a chilly Sunday morning ride and buying it to.cycle through the night in the winter desert.

Maybe those Trans Baviaans riders were just tough guys, or cheapskates, or both?

The are plenty of hardcore riders with crappy gear out there who make me look like an idiot with my expensive kit.

I don’t care though. I’ll take the luxury, thanks.
