Hi, I am thinking about getting a mountain bike to explore the Helderberg region. I am completely new to this. My budget seems to be a bit tight though, about 8K max, so I am not sure if it's worth it to actually continue dreaming about this or if I should rather stick to my hiking boots...

I have been browsing the second hand market, but I'm not too sure what to look out for, so I decided to ask for help and guidance on here.

What should I look out for? Is there something decent out there considering my budget?

I knew it was a good idea to open this thread!

When I see saw all these bikes 15K and more, I had a hunch it might be an expensive hobby. But I'll keep looking and post here if I think I found something decent for little money. Thanks again for the input guys.

I can box and send this one to you all inclusive of your budget of R8k. I doubt that you will get much else for the price: https://bikehub.co.za/classifieds/item/hardtail-mountain-bikes/654769/momsen-29er-aluminium

I will pick up the courier charge

this is a great deal and offer from @RobertWhitehead

@HenningM I would really consider this offer!

It does look reasonable but pedals would need to be purchased (flat or cleated as per your choice) and a chain guide would be advisable in the future.

It's always nice to test ride a bike but might not be possible in your case...

Any reason as to why the chain guide?

In the future the main ring will wear and with the chain in the smallest ring at the rear the chain can become slack enough and with rough terrain it can come off the main ring. Ask me, it happened twice in a race so I bought a chain guide and never had that problem again.

A one by (1x) doesn't have the front derailleur to help keep the chain in check going onto the front chainring.

Bear in mind that you will need to get a a Winelands permit to do any exploring around the Helderberg area. A Winelands South permit will get you access to the farms betwixt S-West and Stellenbosch that allows bikes.

No that is more of a setup issue. A Clutch derailleur and the correct length chain will mostly avoid that. Chain guide is just added insurance that will help in the extreme cases. But it's not a "must -have."

I must say. this is a pretty good deal, Nice 1x11spd, all you need is pedals and off you go. Ready to ride. you wont need upgrades pretty soon.

I will add pedals, no hassles. I just normally complete the build without to give the buyer to either go with cleated pedals or flats. But for Henning I will add into the box
