Scary being chased by them. Got chased a while back just outside Worcester on the road to De Doorns. Got out of my saddle pretty smartly and really got moving

Eish!

Imagine one on your back like a Camelbak

It'll probably be enjoying the wind in its hair ????

Have you seen the teeth on those things?

I have seen what they can do to dogs. Big dogs.

The teeth of a big male baboon matches the teeth on a big male leopard to the mm. Main prey and main predator evenly matched. Nature in balance.

Edit: But of course the solitary leopard also have some well sharpened claws to help him match the fact that baboons keep in troops! Balanced again.

Ja, but... I'd wager that the baboon is a helluva lot stronger than a leopard. In the way that counts, at least. The strength in those arms & legs is stupid.

Funny Story,

My mate and I was coming up Bainskloof pass from Wellington side and as we reached the last table before the top, we can across a big group of baboons. We noticed on the side of the road 2 baboons doing the "baboon nasty". As we soft paddled past the scene, my mate wanted to get the Nat Geo view...

The next moment the big male lashed out at him...He nearly pissed himself and teleported his bike to the other side of the road.

I nearly crashed my bike, laughing....

Needless to say, these days we give the baboons a wider birth and every time we see them a JZ chuckle breaks out...

I have one real alpha male friend (yes, a lawyer) who scared the bejeezus out of the Tokai troop leader once. We came down the old Fairy Garden at speed and were confronted by the big guy refusing to move off the track.  He stopped, jumped off the bike and walked up to the baboon, wagging his finder and shouting on top of his voice: You wanna piece of me? Huh?" The baboon turned tail and fled up a tree before he got cheeky again. We fell of our bikes laughing at the spectacle. I made a mental note to ask for his help if ever I get into trouble with the law! :D

Lived in Tanzania for a while and there is about a 10km stretch where the main north-south tar road touches the Serengeti NP, with a big local baboon troop.  they specialised in ambushing cyclists with huge bags of casava in bags balanced on the bike, guys would have up to 100kg on board.

Cyclists would have to go in convoy for protection.  One day I came across a huge male who had found a lone woman, tackled the bike and was busy chowing the casava with her still underneath, had to mace him to get him off he was that aggressive.

lawyers has always fascinated me, they are either extremely brave or extremely stupid. Male baboons fangs can reach 5 cms, more or less the length of a male lion canine.

But this is part of the reason we ride.

You will never experience that while sitting on your couch.
