Hi All

I have a small itch that I am not sure I want to scratch.

I am contemplating changing my wheelset to a carbon set with a deeper profile.

My bike currently has a set of Mavic R Sys wheels which have given me great service for the 7 or years that I have had them - they are quite light and stiff.

Should I bite the bullet and go down this route?

Will need to be for a rim brakes and I would prefer to stay with tubes for now.

Or should I just ignore this itch and move on !

I have scouted a few options 2nd hand in the classifieds already

Also with Lynskey on this, just do the upgrade!
There are some very nice options in the classifieds as well:thumbup:, then post the pictures later!

Aside from the major touchpoints on your bike, wheels are the best upgrade you can make on your bike in my opinion, and you will notice the difference.

And if you needed a little more motivation to ride in the cold mornings, this could be it 🤣

There’s just something about staring obsessively at the naked carbon of your 50mm hoops, whilst sipping on your coffee at your favourite pitstop, and how it completes your bicycle…

And when in motion, you hear this whooooosshhhhhh sound with a deep hum as the carbon echoes off the tarmac; just sublime…

Of course, your best bra remark on it and you feel just lekka inside while playing it cool…

And now your motivation to train and ride long goes through the roof!

Don’t upgrade. Just don’t.

Lest we forget that when you scratch these itches it also comes with an immediate performance improvement .... Not necessarily because of what you've bought but to justify it to yourself (ok then your wife/partner) you'll put in more effort!

Win/win I reckon so get it 😎

Recommended profile for Cape Town riding?

38mm. Maybe 45mm if you are heavy (like I am)
I wouldn't go more than 50mm unless you had a 2nd set of wheels for windy days.

Your current Mavic wheels are light.
What are you looking to achieve with new wheels ?
Carbon for the sake of carbon (which I support)
Upgrades for the sake of it ? (which everyone here supports)
Aero gains (which dont REALLY make that much difference for us bigger boyz)

Edit: No harm in getting rims that can be run tubeless. You may want to dabble later.

And then, what is your budget?
Good alu is probably better than bad carbon (hubs and braking performance)

If you're not in sales, you should be.

Don't get carbon wheels if:

  • You can't afford R20k+ for the set
  • See reason above.
  • You're upgrading to disc brakes soon.
  • See first point above.

Get carbon wheels if:

  • You like the way they look.
  • You want more aero speed.
  • You have the cash.
  • You plan on keeping that bike for a while (your new bike will have disc brakes)
  • You might try tubeless at some point.

Be very careful with 2nd hand wheels as they've already had "adventures" that you know nothing about.

Invest in the right wheels - 45mm rims with the right "shape" for best crosswind handling, high-quality braking surface that won't delaminate or warp.

Hubs that don't use proprietary spokes and are easy to maintain anywhere in the world.

My personal recommendation:

Nextie 45RX rims on DT Swiss 350 hubs, laced with light bladed spokes and brass nipples.
Approx 1500g at approx R25k
