I don't think I've ever seen arrogance and self importance.... Except maybe once when a rather entitled oke stomped off after the wind cancellation shouting some quite unreasonable stuff. Oh and that idiot who did a risky sprint to come in under 3.15.

What worries me more than that is the risk of accident in such large groups.

I started later year before last I think it was when it was wet because of the risk.

Ctct week is when this plonker pretends he's a pro rider by taking a week's leave to ride the tour du cap and finish in the lower third and pretend Greenpoint is the champs Elysees as he streak across the line.

It's a mundane fantasy but it's mine!

Saw more crashes in 1-3 than i ever did in 4-6. But anyway, i almost didnt enter this year because meh…i was bored with it. When i eventually had a lapse in concentration i made the call that ill do my very best to have some fun again. Might even dress up. Maybe i’m complacent😅 i get that its way more of an event if it costs you an arm and leg and annual leave to get here.

I got a shock entry to this event and suddenly realised I've got six weeks to get from zero to survival mode. Started putting in the miles yesterday and just finished day 2. I'm kaput as I type this and I'm considering my life choices.

If you can ride up Irish to the top twice on one day you can do CTCT slowly.

The arrogance and self importance of the first few alphabet groups makes it unpleasant. This is getting steadily worse.

Guys seem to think they will land a contract with a team if they go under 3 hours. Get a grip - much more pleasant atmosphere in triathlons or riding one day events in Europe.

Actually somewhat agree with the first sentence. But I think it's a small group, mainly "boytjies" who haven't quite made it to the top echelons but talk the talk anyway and find it necessary to yell "hold your line!" in group 1C.

But I joined my wife in group 3-something once and it was glorious. Best day on a bike. Just riders and spectators being awesome, riding along one of the worlds most beautiful coastlines.

Riding up Irish once to the top is a challenge. Twice is mental. Haven't tried, and my knees go weak at the thought, especially that top bit. But I'm sure I will finish. Perhaps last, but I'll finish.

I decided to do what i have always threatened to do - go and ride it for enjoyment and fun - after all it is one of the most beautiful routes in the world. I also decided that maybe an ebike would be the way to do that seen as though i cant get serious about being competitive on that. I have done the 21 completes in rain, wind, wind, fires over Ou Kaaps etc so i think its time to stop worrying about survival and PB's and start to think about a cold one at the Chapmans peak hotel pn the way. Try and get a 6 hour time instead of a 3 as a goal...

It is quite funny how many riders in the second 1A group (because they also missed the split on Smits and refuse to work at all to help me close a 30m gap) suddenly turn into Nacer Bouhani at about 107km, for that all important 652nd place and barely scraping under 3h, or worse causing a huge pileup within sight of the line.

My fastest CTCTs have all been from 1B to 1D, and least enjoyable were in 1A and @
ChrisF's "start later" suggestion sounds tempting, though for some strange reason my dad doesn't seem that keen on me falling back to his group (usually around 2A) and helping him to a good time 🤦‍♂️🤣

When I speak of survival, that is precisely what I mean. My best time at this event is just shy of 5 hours. I'm not built for this type of event, and most assuredly I will see how many beers can be consumed on the day. I'm not attending for a fast time. I'm there for a good time.

Reading this thread brings back many fond memories of the Argus - I'm the biggest whinger when it comes to entrance fees, but lets face it, the ARGUS is special.

I did it on a MTB; a road bike; in the wind; in the rain & in the heat of 2002, managed to just get past the stoppage point on ou kaapse weg and finish. Did the normal route and the de-tour routes.

One year i broke my hand 3 weeks before the start and asked the Doc to modify the plastic brace so i could hold my handle bar - He refused so i went home and did it myself - No way a broken hand was keeping me away from the Argus.

Did my 10th in 2010 & got the special medal - Done 11 in total. first one i did was in 1999 when we had to post in our paper entries in from JHB.

Sitting at the PC with my dial up modem waiting for the online entry portal to open. the system would crash like 20 times before it accepted your entry. Entries were full & closed within 2 hours.

All the after parties at Camps Bay Glen country club.

My best memory was doing it with my son, was his first cycle race at 14.

The characters along the route - Remember getting boobs flashed at me my some hottie when i was coughing up a lung trying to get over Suikerbossie - And we cannot forget the Grim Reaper costume guy as you started up suikerbossie.

Interesting read on Wikki here about the event

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cape_Town_Cycle_Tour

I see they Robbie Hunter as the record holder for the fastest time in 2008 on the 110km Chapmans peak route - For me this will always be the proper Argus route.

I stopped doing it because the excitement got lost somewhere, I got bored fat and sassy and organizing the whole weekend logistics just became an expensive schlep when you living in JHB - Chasing that sub 3 (The holy grail of the Argus) & Club 21 membership became distant &  forgotten dreams the older i got.

A Pro cyclist once told me - winning the Argus has more prestige than winning the SA National Champs.

I think this is one race where the entry fee is worth all the memories created

i've got that porno club21 shirt, and from the time i did my first one last century to now there have always been okes screaming

HOLD YOUR LINE!!

KEEP LEFT!!

It just wouldn't be the same experience without it.

Now that I think about it, with a mere 50 odd days to go and goodie bag discussion done it's annual full circle, why are people not talking about the weather yet?

Dont see them on the 2024 sponsor list.

Then again, if you have been following the Summer's articles it seems PnP is in for a bit of shake up ...

well spotted, Raymond very much mentioned as being a part of this. So it might be a victim of the PnP shakeup (which is extensive).

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=4925044307562361

There is no title sponsor at all this year, not that long ago it was shared with Momentum too.

https://www.capetowncycletour.com/our-sponsors/

(Ineos Grenadier are involved!)

I'm very surprised that no one else has jumped in here, seems like a really good opportunity. For those who want to moan about entry fees and the affordability, the R1m (guessing) that a title sponsor throws in would mostly go indirectly to bottom line of the event, and then to the charities. No sponsors, and they will reduce this, increase entry fee or start cutting costs (or a combination of all three).

Survival now equals making sure i have enough KWH in the batteries the night before rather than carbo loading.

I'm willing to swap bikes in case you feel the need to ride 'Amish'.
