I didn't think about it at the time of this being posted, but my wife is actually going to do the prelude tour as she will be 7 months pregnant come the cycle tour weekend. While she would probably be able to cruise around, the risk of her falling is too much for our risk appetite. This gives a nice alternative to her.

Unfortunately that means I won't gain a year on her as I had planned, number 16 it will be for her.

Eh, if you are gonna ride it in person why worry about the prelude ride. One would think it is a way of including the people that have been excluded next year for religious purposes. I highly doubt they are going to allocate you a sub 3 finish or something like that, often organisations are not as dumb as we think. Don't think it is hunting for more entries either. I think it is the best compromise to include those that have no choice.

I thought people would be losing their minds about the entry fee like every year

Sorry but this is just a quick cash grab. If they really wanted to include the Muslims, they’d have just shifted the date a week. Paying 500 bucks for what exactly? Why not just make it free? There is literally nothing they are doing to justify that amount. The only thing you are getting is a medal.

NO, you never ever "just shift a date".

There are MANY other things planned year in and year out around the "second Sunday in March".

The OP refers to it has “hogwash”.

Some characterise this initiative as if it is fraudulent, a scam, a robbery of sorts.

CTCT is a business. Businesses use brand power, all forms of marketing and innovative or creative strategies to make sales and ensure profitability and sustainability.

The spirit and ethos the Argus as the largest timed cycling event in the world is one of the highlights of the brand that is South Africa. Like the Bokke; like the Comrades.

Opt in. Or not. There are no hostages here, Cupcakes. It’s a business enterprise built on sentiment, popularity and a rich tradition of “are you riding the Argus?”. Or “Do you have a sub 3?”. Or “Club21, another 4 to go.”.

I get this and I accepted it. But then just move on.

Dont say we trying to include people who can’t make it but then charge them R500 to upload a Zwift ride.

I don't have a sub 3.... (Sigh) It could be a marker of maturity to note that I don't want to add "yet" to that sentence, an indicator of acceptance of age but there's also a youthful idiot inside who says don't be soft and has entered the 99er to try for 1a seeding again.

Having done 21.Having done sub3. And not partaking next year and a few after that due to my personal reasons.....I think it's a money grab playing on the the few who would actual fall for this. The whole point of the cycle tour is riding on closed roads around the beautiful Cape Town peninsula, sub3  or not.

So riding any route vitual or not will not be the same. Buying a medal and saying I rode the CTCT..🤔

NOBODY is forcing you to do anything.

IF reaching 21 rides is a goal, then "you" will appreciate their effort.

If not, move along ... enough moaners ....

Maturity doesn't always come with age. I still need to break 3 at some point in my adult life, I did it when I was 15 so surely it can't be that hard...

I see 99er entries are open so I'll be on that train as well.

Winelands is another nice training opportunity, must be worth a bit towards sub-3 ....

But allowing any kind of route does take a bit away from those doing the proper route.

They should have put a little more criteria in place (although I'm not sure what they could have put in place to make it more comparable), or, they should have a separate Finishers roster to differentiate those doing the actual route to those doing other routes.

Its good though that they are looking at other ways to keep the event alive and try and include those that cant make it on the actual day.

For those that think the R500 cost to not do the real ride is a problem, just go a ride 108km without entering then. Just dont expect a medal and a noddy badge.
