Are there not Freeway signs on the onramps from Avianto onto the N14?

Arguing with any cop in SA is about as pointless as it gets. We used to ride that freeway section but as per previous posts, having vehicles pass me at such high speed with the possibility of a truck taking to the emergency land going up the climb and the hugely deteriorated STD of SA drivers means I do the 20km to my ride by car ....

Be safe

I'll check on the way home this afternoon but going West only the "Freeway Ends" signs opposite the new School.  I saw yesterday on the way back to Pta there were "Cyclists and Pedestrians" prohibited signs as you climb the hill past the Avianto Offramp just before the 120kph speed restriction sign but to my knowledge there are no Freeway begins signs going East, just Freeway Ends signs going West.

Is this the section of the N14 that is being questioned?
The green sign would indicate that it is not a freeway.image.png.63f2855773b54886e7ffa19b75d5a04f.png

And these signs would indicate that turning left (the only option) is onto a freeway.

Here is the start of the freeway (officially),above.
The end of the freeway (from PTA to Cradlestone), below, so the "offramp" is not freeway.

Similar situation on the N2 at Somerset West; it's a freeway from Cape Town to the R43 offramp. After the offamp, there's a green sign board. It's no longer freeway for a very long distance.

Are cyclists allowed on Sir Lowry's Pass?
Not talking about whether it's safe or not, but whether it's allowed.

I've cycled on the N2 between Grabouw and the turn towards Villiersdorp just after Botrivier.

Oom H always said you cannot cycle on a freeway.
This is the sign for a freeway
Signs4SA - Your Premier Signage Company in South Africa

It can be marked as "N" and not be a freeway.

A section where there are stopstreets and robots on a N route would not be a freeway and an indication for cyclist allowed.

Be careful with this logic. Two issues:

  1. Although not as common, freeway direction signs can be green as well, explained below.
  2. With direction signs (as what you've posted), the background color depicts the road type you'll end up on if you follow the sign. It does not depict the road type you're on.

From South African Road Traffic Signs Manual Volume 2, Chapter 5 - Freeway Signing, link

4. Freeways are sub-classified into Class A1 and Class A2 roadways, where a Class A1 freeway is a dual carriageway roadway and a Class A2 freeway is a single carriageway freeway (see Volume 1, Section 1.2 "Road Classifications")"

Then from Guidance Signs - 3 - Freeway direction signslink

General Direction signs: Green background
Freeway Direction - Class A1: Blue Background
Freeway Direction - Class A2: Green Background

I just had phone call with the former Head of Traffic in Krugersdorp, he retired in May of this year. He confirmed as per the photos, the section from Riverstone to Cradle Stone Mall is not freeway. We are allowed to cycle there. If the police do stop you, you cannot resist them. Even if they want to arrest you, you can open up a case afterwards of unlawful arrest.

With the image posted, I agree; it doesn't indicate what road you're on.

In that specific case, it's impossible to turn in another other direction other than follow the road to the left (onto the freeway), for normal law-abiding citizens. The official freeway sign (assuming it hasn't been removed) starts on the drag after the on-ramp has merged on the freeway, as the road prior gives users an opportunity to turn left, off the non-freeway road.

This is the sad reality in most cases ....

I checked this morning.  There are two "Freeway Ends" signs on both sides of the road about 500m from the Riverstone offramp directly opposite the new school that was built.

There is also however a clear "No Pedestrians/No Cyclists sign" about 1km before the Freeway ends signs - but nothing else after that.

So if you are coming from Avianto you would see neither signs.

My interpretation - the section from the Riverstone bridge to the Traffic light at Hendrik Potgieter is not a Freeway so no reason why the Police could arrest you for cycling there.

I agree thank you all its been a fun read
