Hi all,

I have just read through 10 pages of "for and against" LA. Well done to all of you, and I love the passion that you have for the topic.

Celebs are all the same - Even when it comes to passport control' date=' they believe they don't have to adhere to the requirements. [/quote']

Lance has accepted it, did not ask for special treatment and the fault lay with deprature customs as it was their duty to ensure there was enough passport space to enter the arrival country.

Confused Huh !!!! ????

Does LA not have "an agent" that supposed to look after these trivial things like travel plans and bookings and passport issues ??? I mean hey- they should have known this !!!

"DTBig%20smile"

It appears that that moving through the various african customs point fuel stop overs on route to SA his passport was stamped repeatedly ending up with no space left.

I will never dispute that Merckx was great' date=' but I have to wonder how it would have been if he was still racing today, where the playing fields are a bit more level, in his day he was without doubt head and shoulders above his competitors.[/quote']

True...

And until we have a time travel machine that will allow the "Tour clash of the titans" we will never know.

IMHO to say one was greater than the other is a little controversial in that races, tactics, politics, equipment have varied so much.

I was discussing the fastest avergae speed in a TDF TT with a fellow Hubber the other day. Armstrong and Zibriskie have had the benefit of full carbon rigs, super precise aero mounted shifters, wind tunnel designed bikes and helmets...yet LeMond simply bolted a set of profile bars to his steel TT bike and literally blasted into Paris to what (I may be mistaken) is still the highest recorded average speed in a Tour TT (not prologue)

Does that mean that if LeMond had been around now with the current generation, would he have been the name that would have stood head and shoulders above the others like Armstrong has?

We will never know. All we can do is applaud the champions for what they have achieved. I'm sure Lance will tell you its an honour to be compared to Merckx...and vice versa.

Best cyclist EVER?????? I think not. Sure winning the TdF 7 times is a amazing feat but' date=' believe it or not, there is more to cycling than 1 race.[/quote']

Eddie. Merckx.

End. Of. Discussion.

Agreed.
The hour record is the ultimate test! No 8 man draft train like the postal express to help out on this one!!

Agreed. The "Hour" reveals all...no one can hide on a flat oval track. Conditions are the same for everyone...its proving ground for greatness in my opinion.

dude, stop being a drama queen.

Lance is no God, he is a man will one ball and determined spirit to help people.

Just because others do not share you view does not make them disciples either.

Lance = Man who was bloody good bike rider then contracted cancer, survived it and went on to win the Tour De France.

I know a young man who at the age of 14 contracted TB, an advanced case, recovered and went on to ride numerous sub 3 Argus Cycle Tours.

There are many cases of people who have overcome the odds and succeeded at a goal. Lance is just one of the most famous but he is still a man.

On a off topic what would you call someone who also overcame big odds in the form of arrving DOA twice at hospital in his teenage years from drugs, in and out of rehab to finally come right and get on a bicycle , win races and overcome the odds that no one ever thought he would??

Would that also not make him GREAT?

Or someone who is 175kg and gets on his bike to lose 75kg isnt that GREAT?

Just asking.

No thats not GREAT.  Admirable yes.

"a person who has achieved distinction and honor in some field" - 7 tour

wins would have to put him in that category no matter what you think of

him..

Yes, Lance inspires many different kinds of people. Some say that last year he inspired one of his teammates to win a race somewhere in Europe... France, I think...
