I am pretty sure it is. Rebranded and sold for 50 times the price I expect

Not sure what it goes for here (I am definitely going to phone and find out tomorrow!) but they are selling it for $8.99!! That's about R56 excl postage and vat! :o

Nice little article on the tube method:

http://nosin.blogspo...ector-from.html

You can also do it on a road bike, though you have to stop or get creative before you get to the RD cable stop. I stuck part of one of those clear stick-on protectors over the last piece of chainstay so that the tube overlapped the end of it (I thought it looked messy adjusting the tube wrap to pass round the cable stop).

Love your work Johan

Under no circumstances should you buy a slap sock or similar product. This is so lame. It is worse than a giant spoke protector, side reflectors in your spokes and a platform pedals with straps - all together.

Real MTBers use old tubes that are skillfully wrapped around the chainstay and fixed with...wait for it.....not cable ties, but by tucking the end uder.

If you have anything other than that protecting your chainstay, you are simply not hardcore. May as well go ride on the road, or ride a Vespa or wear socks or something poofterish like that.

thanks, not the most serious of the threads around i have a spez one which has worked well over the years.......bit more built up on the one side than most.....

in fact isn't CWC getting some lizard skins products in soon.....?

Don't know about the chainstay protectors, but the Lizard Skin mtb grips are great. Got myself some luminous blue ones that are just fantastic. Their handlebar tape is truely out of this world too. Every time I put my hands on them I get a spontaneous release of bodily fluids. Erm, I mean I get sweaty from the excitement.blush.gif The stuff is super grippy and rubbery and even the white bar tape stays clean!

For chainstay protector I would go with the innertube idea. I still have a real retro slapsock that says "Willie Engelbrecht Cycles" on it - from the good ol' days...

Old tubes , handle bar tape, neoprene, as long as it prevents chainslap and makes you silent flying down the singletrack drops and jumps. Best put it around both chainstay and bottom of seatstay too. If you don't ride fast enough to slap that also, you're doing something wrong. The idea is not to prevent chips on your frame, that you should get from crashing if you do MTBing properly. The idea is to enable you to sneak up on the slowpokes and scare the juice out of them! If you sound like you have a cow bell around your neck over the rough bits, you can't do that.

Hi Rock,

If you look around you can find an insulation tape made from a thick rubber. The difference is that the rubber tape is a self bonding type that bonds to itself and forms a solid rubber sheeth where the gunk cannot get into. The closer it is wound onto the chainstay the thicker the protection.

Good luck

I took a old Roadie tyre ... cut off the beading, cut to length and cable tied this together as a chainstay protector. Next version will be an old semislick MTB tyre :)

Works better for me than the old tube scenario. Give it a try.

What about using a piece of VPS protection film, or something similar? Thats the 3m stuff they use to protect the front ends of cars, and helicopter blades

...looks cleaner too, and no chance of sewage seeping in.

Rock, at this rate you may as well use condoms (new or used - your choice), paper towel with varnish or coakie pen to colour in the chip marks!

Maybe you should sit down and have a long chat with your chain and explain the merits of looking after its associated chainstay couzin - couzin!

OK BS aside - ride a singlespeed - no mess no fuss
