30kms each way, to Foreshore. Use coastal road then cycle lanes all the way in. Avg 1:08 in, 1:05 out, depending on the wind. Take clean clothes and shower at work. Leave laptop at work, same with expensive stuff - all stay at home. Ride 5 times per week if windguru permits...although I should stop looking and just ride. Engaged in copious amounts of SCR, but try and keep the HR out of zone 5. No hills at all, but try and ride heavy, so fs and knobblies all the way. Have 5 commuting bibs, numbered which helps the admin. Charge light every night and make sure chain and tyres all ok. Incredible how many scars you can see from punctures where sealant came through. (I'm oldschool, ride tubes with slime in) Greet all other cyclists although seem to have a few very important Pros riding at the moment - concentrating to much to greet back.

legend!

30kms each way?..do you live at melkbosstrand? must be fun in a honking s. easter going home.

i take it you leave shoes at work, and are getting good at rolling long pants and shirts to prevent creases.

just for you

FIVE BEST THINGS TO SAY IF YOU GET CAUGHT SLEEPING AT YOUR DESK:

5. "They told me at the Blood Bank this might happen."

4. "This is just a 15 minute power nap they raved about in the time

management course you sent me to."

3. "Whew! Guess I left the top off the Tippex thinners open . You probably

got here just in time."

2. "Did you ever notice sound coming out of these keyboards when you put

your ear down real close?

And the NUMBER ONE best thing to say if you get caught sleeping at your

desk..

1. Raise your head slowly and say,

"Amen."

Haha, yep, Melkbos! Pants stay at work, as do shoes, just not enough space! Shirt is a nightmare as my folding skills are dodgy at best...so, jersey or something has to hide the creases when I look like I've just been tumbledried. I love the wind. With no hills, that's all I've got to work with...so bring it on. Still better than being stuck in a car. Might just be me getting old, but I would really suggest that if someone was to commute longer distances, often, they make SURE their bikesetup is correct. These distances are short, but day after day, and knee or back can start niggling. Or bum...

I use this time for cave time...time to think and process things. After a while, commuting becomes an addiction of sorts.

Do you guys have shower at work?? That is whats been preventing me from commuting on the bike, even though I live just 4km from work.

Dude - 4km!? Do you even raise a sweat?

I commute once a week between Ballito and Durban (50km one way).

Currently too hectic for me to do this two days in a row, but I'll build up to it.

I leave my car at the office, then cycle home. Then up at 04h30 to start the ride back to the office. It's a nice way to do it because it's 100% commitment: In the morning there's only one way to get back to the office - ride! So pulling out is not an option.

But then I ride with 2 spare tubes (from experience), a small penlight torch for doing repairs in the darkness, a whole wack of visibility (strong front light, 2 red flashers on the back, reflectors around my ankles), pepper spray, and a small prayer.

Inevitably I have a head wind coming home, and then again in the morning back to work. I think Murphy has something to do with it.

I want to start commuting from Honeydew Ridge to Jhb CBD - The safest route I have plotted out takes me over Northcliff Hill, not fit enough for it yet but working on it, hopefully in a couple of weeks I can start twice a week and go from there. Its about 25km each way with some horrible climbs

Hey Chris,

I'm in Weltevreden park and work in Braamfontien. Its about 18km for me, but I have worked out a few routes that reduce traffic, etc. and the climbs aren't too bad. PM me if you are interested.

So with Sani2c rapidly approaching i need to get some training in, the idea of a commute to work once a week would be a great help. The distance is roughly 45k's each way (90k round trip) from Benoni to Mondeor in the Souff (would still need to plan a safe and enjoyable route), fortunately my parents live next door to work so showering and things should be easy.

My fear is im going to be to tired to do any work during the day :(

Hi Gavin

Did you ever try commuting?

50km three times a week on a heavy SS- Bike and carrybag weigh 19kgs. 700m of climbing a day.

Laptop stays at work. I have another one (with internet) at home so if I need to work at home I carry files on a memory stick
