Has anyone seen Seth's bike hacks video where he uses WD40 to clean a cassette? According to him WD40 is not a lubricant but a solvent. Anyone tried it and how did it go?

I have used WD 40 to remove old lube from my chains (after removing form bike). Soak a while and brush. After that I used Clean GreenĀ  and water to remove the WD40.

... interesting. I wonder if it will remove thick gunk from the cassette.

Paraffin is cheaper

Agree. I've tried paraffin before but disposing of it is a hassle. I normally use Kleen Green but requires a lot of scrubbing. I was wondering if WD40 spray can dissolve the cassette gunk more effectively.

WD40 is not environmentally friendly either.

I dont understand why you would use any products to clean the cassette? A clean cloth and some light wiping is all it takes...

I generally do a maintenance clean with the wheel off the bike but cassette on the wheel, thread a section of cloth through, and saw back and forth using the freewheel to turn and then resist the cloth...

Ā

For a major service or clean, remove the cassette from the wheel, and wipe each cog clean with the cloth...

Ā

The risk of detergent, solvent, or stripper near the hub and freebody bearings is just too much and it becomes a massive mess anyway...

Ā

Old T shirts do the trick for a messy rag too... Cheap as chips..

Re-purpose it.Ā

I keep mine in a jar / tin, and whenever I need to start a fire for braai or in my fireplace, I use an old, used up rag, that I soak in the paraffin. Perfect fire starter.Ā

spritz some paraffin/petrol/turps on the cassette, then slide a lekker rag between the two biggest sprockets and "floss" back and forth. The cassette will engage allowing you to "Stay in one place", but get all the way around the cassette. Slide the cloth out, and move on to the next "gap" between the sprockets. This gets them decently clean and it takes a minute. Wheel has to be taken out to do this nicely, layed flat on the ground.

Spritzing???? I thought that only happened in German porn movies

Never thought of that!
