  1. So my internal patch seems to be holding, but I noticed yesterday I put the tyre on backwards. "facepalm"
  2. decent car comment was in italics, i.e. not to be taken seriously. As for your requirements, not much on the market will meet your needs. Back to the Thule, just make sure once you've unclipped the plastic part that the Thule does not move around when clamped, it could very well just be aesthetic if its easy to clip off.
  3. Strange thing happened yesterday. Heading out to Alberton, near Dawn Park, dual carriage way both sides, there is a cyclist on the opposite side of the road and gestures to me as I get closer, I slow down and try and establish if he needs assistance, he says something that I dont really hear properly. So I stop. He comes across to the grass between the 2 sides of the road, to which I do the same. Says he is looking for riding partners and after a brief conversation says I should take his number and whatsapp him when I ride that area again so we can ride together. Thinking about it afterwards it could easily have been a ploy to get me to stop and bike hack me, thankfully it didnt happen, but I still think its strange and my trust no-one thinking has me thinking there is more to this. It was a little silly on my part as my guard was down whilst talking to him.
  4. Fischers on a SS, you're a brave man. Sexy bike that. Congrats
  5. That’s seriously wrong
  6. Yes and no, the average Joe these days just drops his bike off at the bike shop. Agreed. But the weight saving is not unique to cycling, motor racing are continuously developing lighter braking components. The difference though as that they are able to generate more heat in the discs so they are able to use lighter weight materials like carbon ceramic. it will be interesting to see what the bicycle industry come up with in this regards. You see this is a little more “it’s no good for me” rather than your previous post making it sound definitive that discs on road bikes are complete rubbish. Granted I don’t have much experience with discs, but I’ve done over 12000km on what must be one of the top 10 most rubbish OEM hydraulic brake setups, the Giant Conduct system. Cable actuated hydraulic system linked to generic calipers clamping into 140mm stamped rotors. they have required much more maintenance than rim brakes, but, have provided much better stopping power than I ever had with any of my rim brake road bikes. And now that I’ve gone 160mm front disc, but more importantly Jagwire pads they’re just so much better.
  7. Diesel for the most part I respect your input on technical threads as you have experience in the real world, however on this one I’m seeing a strong personal bias against discs on road bikes and I think it’s clouding your logic. warping discs are not unique to bicycles and happen on discs that are much thicker and heavier and built to withstand more heat. The problem will never go away on metallic discs. As long as there are heat differences across the surface of the disc it will warp. Disc truing on mtb is that not more a case of the disc receiving more knocks to it? your story of your mate descending chappies, sounds very suspect. Discs generally suffer less from lack of stopping power in the wet than rim brakes, to suddenly lock up my logic tells me his rear wheel hit a patch of something on the road that caused sudden loss of traction rather than the brakes suddenly biting.
  8. re: discs warping, this for me is a user issue. The most common reason for discs warping is large temperature differences between parts of the disc. This would be heavy braking and coming to and staying at a dead stop for a period of time, where the pads sit will cool down slower than the rest. Same thing will happen in your car. Dont do this. Second user issue I see far to often is water being squirted onto hot discs to cool them down. DO NOT DO THIS.
  9. I think we watched the first 2 episodes, wife refuses to watch more due to the blood and gore
  10. Hopefully it warns you before changing. Wouldnt want to be putting the power down to grind up a hill and the electronics all of a sudden decide to select a mcuh much easier gear. Chin meet stem balls meet toptube
  11. The one thing that I did pick up on GCN review about these is that there is no ability to ad satellite shifters. whilst not a big deal, half the appeal to me about electro shifting is being able to have strategically placed satellite shifters.
  12. I’m a gadget geek, love gadgets, and the idea of electric gear shifts excite me. But, as with most rechargeable gadgets, I’m not looking forward to a few years down the line when you need new batteries. They will be expensive and or impossible to find because new tech has superceded the old battery tech and manufacturers have stopped making batteries for them.
  13. I was scolded for asking this a while back regarding another event. I just keep quiet in the corner now.
  14. look I'm pro disc brakes and if you're getting a new bike then 11spd or higher is the way to go, but I really dont see spares being an issue on 10 spd or rim brakes for many years to come.
  15. I tried that once, when I pulled the surgical gloves off a stream of sweat poured out. Never realised my hands sweated so much when I cycled.
  16. I found Q Bike to get very dirty very quickly. Just finished a bottle of White Lightening, wasnt overly impressed, and have now started with a bottle of Squirt. I've got a reminder to re-lube every 250km, but if I feel my drivetrain is getting a little noisy I'll wipe off excess grime and lube before the 250km mark. (This is on a road bike)
  17. And this was the type of puncture that would have sealed without me knowing, had I not been lazy last weekend and taken the time to patch my tyre instead of just leaving the tube in. also, 3 groups of cyclists came past, only the last group asked if I needed help, but by that time my support crew were at the traffic light 50m away.
  18. 5km from home I realized I forgot my bottle and fastbar, so turned back to get them. had a lekker ride despite the wind, then 15km from home on the way back I decided to stop and see if the power was back on at home so that I could turn the geyser on and have hot water when I got home. That’s when I heard the hiss from the rear wheel. I thought it would hold until I got home so carried on. 10km from home and I can feel I’m bouncing on each pedal stroke. Pull over, whip out a bomb and adapter and try and get it going. Only to realize the new adapter I bought won’t pierce the bomb. Had to make the call to the support team (aka wife and kids) to come fetch me.
  19. oh ok, did not know of one there
  20. might be the one in Alrode I was referring to earlier.
  21. I was looking at the tub of coconut oil in the kitchen the other day. Its in a wax form, spoon some out and put it in a pot and it liquifies rather quickly. Had me wondering how it would work as a chain lube.
  22. older neighbour across the road used to race BMX. Always looked up to him back then, he had some skills. Was very surprised last year when trying out new routes to get to my old neighbourhood and saw that the Alrode BMX track was still there and did not look to be neglected either.
  23. I had a similar Raliegh in blue, but it had cable brakes and did not have that extra bit between the toptube and the steerer. I then won a competition through PnP and Pro Nutro , the prize being a Redline BMX. Loved that bike.
