  1. Ok so we're agreed, its not just for "gentle commuting...." etc.
  2. I dont think that its "Obviously, .... for gentle commuting to and from the shops, school, library etc......" the dutch have a huge & varied cycling scene. If they were in an event as you describe, i expect you would see a lot of helmets.
  3. Just started the 2nd time now on low carb - which basically means cut out/reduce greatly, sugar (inc. fruit) and flour. 5 days in and lost a kg and feel much better, though thinking ahead for food plans is a schlep. Thats why i gave it up last time, having lost 5kgs in 5 weeks, it does get involving. Getting to realise that as i get older, my bod doesnt deal with sugar/refined carbs very well and I cant shift the weight any other way. The biggest benefit of this approach is you dont have the hunger cycle that the hi-GI carbs sets off.
  4. And in other news - Slower Western Cape cyclists show a marked improvement in their training times
  5. Consequences should be - 1 angry customer and a ban on him selling on the Hub; no problem. My eldest son is 20. He does what they all do. When he was 16/17, I said "if you get arrested dont call me in the middle of the night - i'll come and get you in the morning". He's never called but he did tell me it cost him R20 to get out of the police cells once.
  6. The deal is void, mistakes were made - no need to continue to give these folk a hard time. As usual, the lynch mob looks worse than those they are attacking.
  7. Was out on Weds night mostly on jeep track with a group. I didnt take spares because it was straightforward ground, until we got taken over a lot of cut grass and devil thorns. 2hr ride became nearly 3hrs as one after another got flats. I kept quiet and everything crossed that it wouldnt be me next - i think tubeless was my friend; but would've been embarrassing so I'll take something with me from now on.
  8. If I came unstuck through my own fault and wanted help, I would have asked. ....didnt realise there was a club, I've been winging it by myself not helping up til now.

    MTB girls

She does have a "what the hell am i doing here" look about her. They did dress her up pretty silly; but good to see she's got the proper mtb'ers manicure.
  10. Good for Pmb folk. Their is no market for high-end bikes in Malawi, so it would be interesting to have some more details as to what was found.
  11. I've seen manuals saying that the lever should leave a (temporary) print on your palm when you close it. Generally they should point up and some folk get very excited on some (imagined?) safety issue if they point down.
  12. Sure - it's all opinions, but I reckon playing football on a bicycle is more dangerous.
  13. I stopped thinking about it when i was a kid - as far as i was concerned there was a little man inside who pushed levers and buttons; he was related to the other little man inside the TV flipping pictures over.
  14. I think the argument is very similar to why guys dont use condoms Slowbee. But then that's hard to check for when they're riding a bike.
  15. Why should he be setting an example to anyone? And if he's made it to his mid-60s he probably knows what he's doing.
  16. There's times to wear one and times where its not so important. Not a big deal.
  17. I know you're concerned about getting billed according to size, but the Hub wont charge you more for posting in a bigger font.
  18. My friend forgot to take their homeopathy meds and died of an overdose.
  19. That's why they call it that. ;-)

    Traffic circle

I think Stretch is correct; but Capt A has a good handle on practicalities. I think a cyclist has to take account of custom and what our dimwit motorists are likely to be thinking. Being right and dead isn't so great. Couple of points - if you're going out on 3rd exit; don't go round the outside lane. If you cant be confident and get in the middle; then better to walk it. Scariest roundabout i've been on - Arc de triomphe, across 5 or 6 exits. Once only!
  21. It's a great event & Wickus doesnt look like he's getting rich on it. For a mid-packer it's a serious but do-able challenge. The training must be taken seriously and the costs are much more than you've worked out so far! Apart from the distance; your biggest adversary is likely to bethe weather.
  22. 2 people on this thread, and now me, have pointed out that the more recently-priced watermelon, going by the sell-by dates, was the cheaper one. And if there were two melons at two prices, a top tip would be to buy the cheaper one.
  23. There's a few Tjoks, but also regular mtb traffic coming across that road to and from rietvlei and the r59 blockhouse. Still wouldnt advise for single female, but cool in pairs and more. You feel like a champ goin down and a putz comin back slight incline and prevailing breeze against.
  24. 12yrs - not the best result, but far from the worst. I hope it means something to the families of those who were killed.
